CHARACTER
Name:Jane Lane
Canon: Daria
Timeline: Mid way through S5 E7, Art Burns, where Jane begins to believe she's working in an art forgery ring.

Personality: Jane Lane; artist extraordinaire is far from what you'd expect a high school girl to be like. Instead of being brainless and perky, Jane's sharp as a tack and cynical beyond her years. While Jane shows incredible intellect via her art and speech, her grades don’t reflect as such. According to ‘Jane’s Addition’, she’s on academic probation for her low grades. This may be causes by her laziness or simply by her lack of care towards school.

Jane's shown to be quite the gambler, beginning several bets with Daria, most notably in S5 E3, "Fat Like Me", where makes numerous bets, such as gambling five dollars on that there are more Juicy Joe's than there are Zoo Zoo Drops in a packet. When she loses the bet, she offers another five in the belief that Kevin Thompson will crush a can with his head in an attempt to impress his friends. Again, the loses the bet, but, once more, bets that the fashion club will disband in the President's absence.

Her witty banter even extends to her superiors. On numerous occasions, Jane pokes fun at Ms. Barch's fury over her divorce, once even quoting Shakespeare's "'Tis better to have loved and lost". This fearless playfulness is even used on Mr. DeMartino, shown when Jane finishes his sentences in S5 E3 "Fat Like Me", by quietly guessing each insult he's about to use on the students. Although, despite her playfulness, Jane is shown to be extremely sarcastic. When Lawndale High goes on a camping trip, while some students discuss the concerning weather Jane looks at the dark clouds and asks if they're 'in for a storm of epic proportions'. Again, when Mr. DeMartino begins to go on a psychotic rant about how his 'buddy' married his Mother, Jane wanders by, asking Daria if she 'wants to hear any more of this story'. Her sarcasm also seems to give her something of a morbid personality, as during the group hike the supplies are left at the bus due to Quinn's idiocy, Jane smiles and informs Daria that things could be worse, and that at least they were going to get to watch a lynching.

Jane also demonstrates a wild imagination, considering that Quinn might become the Fashion Club's leader and bring about the apocalypse and that Daria might be a communist, lesbian alien. Due to her serene attitude, it's hard to tell when she's serious, and she's most likely doesn't believe in such things; although, she is a fan of 'Sick, Sad World' a newspaper similar to 'The Weekly World News', which may have inspired her insane ideas. She also shows interest in the more macabre side of things, expressing an interest in cannibalism and unique ways to die. Since somewhat it works into her imagination, it's worth a mention that Jane will make up things in order to help her friends. When Daria wanted to have an apology session, believing she and Jane were to die, the two only made one apology each. Since Daria wanted to apologise for more, Jane says she's sorry that the M&M people 'added those ugly, blue M&Ms', successfully letting Daria make her peace.

As for her social graces, Jane prefers to keep out of things, observing them and mocking them from the sidelines. One could assume it's a defense mechanism, one designed to keep people from getting to know her, when, in fact, it's as simple as Jane just not liking people. She sees the majority of the world as dumb, therefor, a waste of time. Often she shows borderline sociopathic tendencies, often seeming to refer to her classmates more as things of either entertainment or annoyance, than people. If she didn't show genuine, human affection for a select few, one could say she's a complete sociopath. This leaves her out of the realms of mental illness into the realms of a plain, old anti-social personality, where only those with an intellect high enough to match her witty banter can have her positive attention.

Though, Jane still shows kindness to those she views as stupid. In S4 E9, Mart of Darkness, Jane and Daria discover Andrea is working at the warehouse. While Andrea expects the two to cut her to shreds, Jane shrugs it off, saying that she didn’t think they could ‘cut her up any worse than she (Andrea) just did’. While Jane’s kindness is well hidden under layers of sarcasm and bitterness, she does seem to - on occasion - show compassion towards her classmates and teachers. Another example is when she visits Mr. O’Neill after he has an emotional breakdown and begins questioning his teaching ability. In the end, she convinces him he’s not a failure as a teacher, and that he should return to Lawndale High to resume his position. Even to those she genuinely dislikes, she shows the occasion hint of mercy. In S3 E5, Daria Dance Party, she lets Quinn take all the credit for Jane’s two day marathon of work painting the gym, despite chances to claim the glory for herself. Jane even protects Brittany from a perverted car salesman in S4 E1, Partners Complaint, by attempting to shift the salesman’s attention away from seducing Brittany and onto the economics project they’re supposed to be working on.

Despite her dislike for humanity, Jane will give credit where credit is due. She calls Mrs. Li 'kinda heroic' when she volunteers to go save Mr. O'Neill. While she recanted the statement after finding out Mrs. Li was only doing it to get Mr. O'Neill's video camera, it still demonstrates a side of Jane that isn't completely sarcastic.

When it comes to romance, Jane is far from shy. When she first meets Tom, she fearlessly speaks to him, even mocking his assumption she's a singer by preforming the worst rendition of 'Old McDonald' in the known world. When he informs her of how terrible it was, her attraction to him grows, and she compliments him on being 'an honest one'. Clearly, Jane values honesty in a person - not just in friendships, but in romantic relationships. But, this confident air comes at a price. She’s incredibly insecure about her romantic relationships, being accusatory towards those who she believes are trying to threaten her romance. She always comes to her senses, though, and realises how unreasonable she’s acting. Although, her accusations always have a root of truth, making them not entirely implausible, just slightly paranoid, which she openly admits and accepts. In all, she’s afraid of abandonment, which makes sense, judging by how her parents are around her.

On a similar note to romance, Jane, like most girls, does have a weakness for cute guys, often shamelessly hitting on them, in spite of any protests made by Daria. Again, in S3 E5, Daria Dance Party, she meets Upchuck’s cousins, inviting them to sit with her and Daria, even though she promised to send them away for staring at the two. When Daria gets pouty over the development, Jane shrugs it off and focuses on getting a date, only to back off the boys when they reveal why they’re at the dance party. Jane also seems to become rather distracted by boys, such as Guy Fawkes day in S3 E4, Depth Takes a Holiday. He distracts her from actually seeing the trouble Daria would have to go to in order to let him stay at her house, even telling Daria “don’t be stupid - he’s cute,” in order to convince her friend to let the hot guy stay.

While Jane exhibits incredible loyalty towards her friends - as show through her constant support of Daria, even during Daria's relationship with Tom, even suggesting the two go out, despite having her heart broken - doesn't mean she's above teasing. In the S4 E7, 'Antisocial Climbers', Jane agrees to go on a school hike with Daria. When Daria thanks her, Jane shrugs it off, asking what else are friends for - then demanding fifty dollars. In earlier episodes, she teases Daria about her relationship with Trent, often dragging Tom away in order to give the two 'alone time'. She also appears to channel some of her bitterness brought on by her confusion into her playfulness. In S5 E9, Life in the Past Lane, she makes numerous jokes about Nathan - her current boyfriend - becoming Daria’s next bo; the exact same thing that happened with Tom.

When she feels emotionally overwhelmed, Jane tends not to express it, but to run, instead. Not run away, just run, something she shows a real talent for. When she does show emotional turmoil, it’s always quiet, no screaming - aside from her fight with Tom, though the screaming only lasted a second - or crying. Just quiet talking with someone close to her. Jane even seems confused about her own emotions, asking Trent why she feels like puking after breaking up with Tom.

Underneath all her cynicism and near impenetrable wall of sarcasm, lies quite the temper. While it’s hard to make her mad, when Jane is pissed, expect a shit storm. When she believes Daria botched her streaks on purpose, she banishes her from the Lane house, refusing to speak to her for several days. Although, she comes to her senses, realising Daria is a true friend, and would never purposely try to hurt her. Clearly, she gets over her problems not only by herself, but over a short period of time.

In S2 E11, See Jane Run, when the Coach calls Jane’s family a ‘family of deadbeats’, Jane becomes enraged and determined to redeem her family name. She ends up joining the track team, becoming the star runner and showing that there’s more to the Lane family than meets the eye. Of course, she still complains about them, but, at the same time, she exhibits a certain protective quality when it comes to them. Even Wind, who, questionably, annoys her the most, is treated with patience in S5 E7, Art Burn, when Jane goes out of her way to rebuild the gazebo Wind loves so much. This patience, flexibility and care is also exhibited in S3 E8, Lane Miserables, when all the Lane siblings return home to visit their parents and younger siblings. When Penny, Summer, Wind and Summer’s children take up all the space, despite the knowledge Jane could easily kick them out of her room, she allows them to stay, choosing to move herself.

Having Jane as a friend can pretty much be summed up in a short quote by Jane in S4 E1, when Daria mistreats Jane for no real reason;
“Imagine if you had this really good friend who was having a really bad week - and this friend’s been pretty much acting like a jerk toward you. But, you already know how bad she feels about it... You with me? Maybe it’s this friend you don’t really get to see, as often as you used to - but you still care just as much about her, and you hate to see her unhappy. Well, maybe you just forgive that friend for what she did, without even asking for an apology. Just to let her know, you know, that you’re still best friends.”
When Daria expresses her confusion and shock, Jane finishes by saying; “Well, then. I’d just tell her I’d meet her for pizza after school. Give the kid some time to collect herself.”

Ok. Well. This is new.

[On the camera is a very bored looking girl. That's right; bored. Not afraid. Not crying in terror of the ghosts that have swarmed her, trying their best routines in an attempt to scare the pants off her, despite the gorey illusions the spirts seem to be able to create. No, the girl just looks bored out of her wits.]

Hey, you mind moving?

[Jane waves her hand to the left, and a bloodied ghost pauses it's 'boo'-ing to shift, slightly, allowing her to pass by.]

Anyway, this is Jane-cam, where you can watch me suffer through these asses- [She cocks her head at a few ghosts.] While I try to find a way out of this room.

I can already tell this'll be a barrel of laughs for the ages.

[And, with that, Jane's walking speed increases, big, black boots thumping against the checkered floor, surely alerting any other residents nearby of her presence - in case they didn't get her message.]

The processing was pretty easy for Jane. In fact, it was almost like every other day back at Lawndale High. A bunch of forms you had to fill out, a giant idiot ordering you around, and the urge to piss constantly prodding the back of her mind. Just like any one of her classes. Of course, she'd yet to obtain proof any of her teachers were robots - she had her theories about Mr. DeMartino, but no proof as of late.
But, knowing her luck, this world was ruled by the Fashion Club, and she'd be forced to wear tight jeans and a tank top for the rest of her life... Maybe if she lay down in front of one of those robots, they'd put her out of her misery. Just a quick stomp and she'd be free of Quinn's highly varnish tyranny. Thankfully, one of her processors nudged her along, and out into the extremely metallic outside, proving to her that Quinn simply couldn't survive in a world without strawberry clouds and unicorns prancing in cashmere sweaters.

"Thanks, pal." Jane nodded at the 'bot, shoving her hands into her pocket as she calmly strolled away from the processing center, leaving behind a rather confused robot. So what if she wasn't crying and screaming? All she'd really done was mutter 'damn' a few times, due to not getting to find out if she was in a crime syndicate back home. Besides, this whole thing could be written off as a mental health holiday; help her regain some of that blocked creativity. Who wouldn't want to buy a painting of a mechanical wonderland? Maybe she'd work on some of her architectural pieces, should be find inspiration from the giant robots that wandered around the city.

All she needed was an easel. Where, exactly, she’d find one, was the newest appointed task of her communicator, which, after a debate brought on by the piece of crap not bringing her a pizza, was forever named ‘Hunk’. Leaving the finding of inspiration to the artist, herself. As well as finding the nearest CD player. Aaand finding loud rock music to drown out anyone complaining about said loud music.

Then, again, couldn’t a robot just destroy the CD player, therefor leaving the option of debate useless? Hm. Food for thought.
