The First Death: Hello, how are you, where am I?

Dec 14, 2009 00:08

[A very unusual-looking young woman frowns on the video feed. Her hair is almost pure white, except for one pitch black streak running through it, but her clothes are gray, and almost boring. She's decided this odd device is the most unusual feature of her surroundings, right this moment, trying to figure it out. Not an easy task, for someone who ( Read more... )

powered by magic, far from home, what on the disc is this?

Yes, at home, we have devices... about this size, they're very new-fangled. Apparently they're powered by a very small imp, like the less accurate, but unfortunately more fashionable, watches back home.

Certainly fewer blinking lights.

Ah, I don't think there are imps inside of these...spirits called the Animus do speak over them from time to time, but they're more like...a cellular phone with video.

['Cellular phone' means nothing to her, sorry small wizard. But she seems to connect them with what Carmen has told her, about communication devices] Yes, a message relaying device, with, apparently, audio-visual capabilities. It's actually pretty fascinating.

Ah, excuse me. I'm Susan, and you are? And who are these Animus?

Well, that's technology for you! A lot of what they can do is fascinating. But in the year I'm from, they haven't quite reached video phones yet. At least with magic, I can send a letter with a hologram of myself. It's not quite the same because it isn't as interactive, but...

[He would ramble on, but he shakes his head, obviously realizing that what he's saying may not be interesting.]

I'm sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Negi. It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Susan! [Slight head bow]

The Animus are these spirits, I suppose, that like to play tricks on us every couple of weeks. They've turned this entire place into an island with beaches before.

...Ah, are you a wizard then? You must be a student, you look quite young. Have you heard of the Unseen University then?

Nice to meet you too.

Spirits? Do you mean ghosts of the deceased, or some other kind of incoporeal being?

A-actually, I've already graduated... [A somewhat nervous laugh] I'm an English teacher at a middle school in Japan, now. Um, but I've never heard of this Unseen University. Our worlds must not be very closely related.

I don't think anyone is quite sure what they are, to be honest. I don't think that they are spirits of deceased people...

Ah, I see. Forgive me. Japan? Definitely not from the Discworld then. The Unseen University, in my world, is the usual place wizards learn their... craft.

Hm, that's a bit disappointing, though it may be worth looking into. Though possibly... more personified forces? Cousins to the Auditors?

...you don't seem to be too startled by the fact that I just mentioned the existance of multiple worlds.

I think someone has looked into it once before...but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to try. It might help others more if we know more about what the Animus are.

Given the overwhelming evidence that I am, in point of fact, currently in one of these 'different worlds', no, I'm not. Facts would seem to point to that conclusion, no matter how strange it may seem. And I've seen stranger things than this.

Given how powerful they sound, I certainly must agree that more information would be helpful, yes.
