It was raining hard and Ohno stared at the rain with blank look. Well, he was safe from the rain because he had been lucky enough to arrive at the bus station before the sky opened up and let the rain fell down to the earth. Though it didn’t really matter much to him because Ohno brought his white umbrella with him today.
It was quiet, just the sound of the raindrops falling on top of the bus station’s roof could be heard, and Ohno was sitting there silently, mentally listing all the things he needed to do today so that he wouldn’t forget it - he would not let his rusty brain hinder him from doing normal activities - when the sound of water splashing woke him up from his daydreaming state - Ohno didn’t even realized that he had been daydreaming - and suddenly he found himself not alone in his shelter anymore.
A man, slightly shorter than him, wearing a black business suit with stripped tie, holding a black briefcase in his hand, entered his vision, ruining his perfect quiet thinking spot. Well, it’s not like the bus station was Ohno’s in the first place so he couldn’t ask this stranger to go just because he had entered Ohno’s sanctuary without permission. And it was raining outside too. It would be too cruel of Ohno not to let the stranger to have a moment to breathe and dried himself from the sudden rain.
The man was busy wiping the raindrops from his suit and briefcase when he suddenly turned to face Ohno, and Ohno was surprised to see that the man, despite wearing a cheap-looking suit - the kind of thing his fashionista friend (namely Matsumoto Jun) wouldn’t buy - has a very youthful face. Ohno knew he gaped and that’s embarrassing, but he couldn’t stop staring at the man. The man just gave him strange look and didn’t say anything as he looked outside.
“Damn this rain.” The man - or the stranger, as how Ohno dubbed him in his head - muttered slowly as he glared at the pouring rain outside their shelter. He looked like he was in a hurry and Ohno didn’t know why but he had this urge to help the man. Eyeing the white umbrella in his hand, Ohno stood up from his seat and approached the stranger.
“Here.” Ohno gave the stranger his white umbrella and the stranger look surprised by the kindness. “You seem to be in a hurry.”
The man hesitated. Should he accept the umbrella? The rain was pouring really hard outside but he really needed to go back to the company fast or he’d get scolded, or worse get fired, and that’s something he absolutely dreaded. But what about the umbrella man, though? He also needed the umbrella and-
Like Ohno could read the stranger’s mind, he pushed the umbrella to the man’s hands wordlessly.
“But-“ The man protested, he didn’t deserve this kindness.
“It’s okay. You need it more than me.”
“But-“ The man tried again.
“Go.” Ohno simply cut the man’s protest with his one syllable answer. The man sighed as he smiled at Ohno, his smile was so childlike and so pure Ohno was left gaping again at the beautiful sight in front of him.
“Thank you, err, who’s your name?”
“Ohno Satoshi.” Ohno reached out his hand and the man shook it. The stranger’s hand was stubby and felt like hamburgers (Ohno’s other friend, Aiba Masaki, would definitely try to eat the hands even if it’s not edible just to try whether it tasted like hamburgers), but strangely it was warm and fit perfectly with Ohno’s. “And you?”
The stranger was opening the umbrella as he prepared himself to go back to the company where he worked and also prepared himself for the battle with the damn rain outside when Ohno delivered his question. The man looked back at Ohno with another childish smile on his face as he answered the question.
“My name is-“

The day was sunny as usual when Ohno left out the house that day. Birds were singing and the wind blew quietly, like it was whispering to him, It will be okay so don’t worry. Everything was so normal and yet he didn’t know why he felt the urge to bring his boring white umbrella with him today. People were giving him strange looks as he walked along the busy Shibuya streets to the nearest bus station to catch a bus to go to his friend’s place. He promised his friend that he’s going to accompany him to the department store to buy a birthday present for their friend.
Though Ohno almost forget it if it’s not for the call he received this morning from his friend, Jun, who berated him for being late for their appointment today. Ohno gasped and muttered his apology over and over again to Jun and eventually he slipped that he ‘forgot’ about this appointment.
Jun suddenly turned silent after Ohno’s slip and Ohno felt like punching himself for being so stupid and blurted out the real reason why he came late for their appointment.
“Again, Satoshi-kun?” Jun’s voice was calm and steady but Ohno could detect the worry in it and he felt bad for making Jun worried about him. It’s always like this since they were children, since the first time day they discover that there’s something wrong with Ohno’s brain, Jun was always by his side to protect him. Jun even got into fight with his own boyfriend, the hot-blooded male by the name of Sakurai Sho, for caring too much about Ohno.
“It’s okay, Jun-kun. I’m okay.” Ohno tried to inject as much cheerfulness in his tone so that Jun wouldn’t know that he’s bothered that he forgot again, after he had trained himself not to forget anymore. He had forgotten so many things in his life and Ohno didn’t want to forget more than he already had. It’s been hard for him when he forgot yet another fact, another name, another face, that he should have remembered and recognized. His brain slowly died and withered the older he got and no matter what Ohno did he couldn’t stop the process. There would be days when he would not remember anything but Ohno tried not to think about that. “It’s still a long way to go Satoshi-kun,” that’s what Jun had said to him when he was being afraid of forgetting everything.
But Ohno had vowed that day, that day when he had almost forgotten about his own self, that he would train himself not to forget anymore, and that at least he’d try to fight this illness as hard as he could. Of course, there’s always something that he forgot, some trivial information or facts like his promise to Jun. And also a figure of someone standing in the rain holding a white umbrella-
The sound of the thunder that came suddenly from the sky above startled Ohno. He immediately woke up from his reverie - Ohno couldn’t believe that he’s daydreaming again - as he looked up at the sky and was surprised to find it getting dark. Wasn’t it sunny just now?
Ohno kept on walking to the nearest bus station that would bring him to Jun’s apartment, apparently not in a hurry like the people around him who tried to avoid getting wet by the rain since he brought his white umbrella with him. He walked in a steady pace until he reached the bus station without even opening his umbrella. It was when he reached the bus station that it started raining.
Ohno sat down on the available bench on the bus station since the station was quite crowded today due to the people going there to shelter themselves from the rain, waiting for the bus to come, when another poor soul who was drenched from the rain went to shelter himself from the rain at the bus station also and stood beside Ohno, wiping away the raindrops from his suit.
He knew it’s rude, but Ohno couldn’t stop staring at the new stranger who had just entered the bus station. The man looked familiar to him but for the life of him he couldn’t remember where he had met the stranger before. The stranger wear a boring business suit like the others but somehow the sight of that man in his suit made Ohno’s heart beat a little bit faster than usual.
The stranger then turned to look at him, as if knowing that he was being watched, and Ohno was a second too late to turn his head to pretend that he’s not looking at the man the entire time when the man caught his gaze, and offered Ohno a childish smile. Something about that smile caught Ohno off guard, it was so bright and cheerful and warm and Ohno felt like he had known that smile before.
The childish smile on the stranger’s face turned into a mischievous one when he saw the umbrella in Ohno’s hands. Then the stranger suddenly reached out his hand at Ohno, making Ohno blink in confusion at the sudden movement.
“Wha-“
“Lend me your umbrella.” The stranger cut him as he pointed at the pouring rain outside with a tilt of his head. “I need to go back to work or I’ll get fired. You seem like you don’t need it anyway.”
Ohno stared dumbly at the stranger in front of him before he reluctantly gave the umbrella in his hands to the stranger. Not that he minded because he had another white umbrella in his house that he didn’t remember buying and the bus stop in front of Jun’s apartment so he didn’t need to walk far. He certainly didn’t need the umbrella.
The stranger smirked at Ohno as he opened the white umbrella and preparing himself to battle with the rain outside when he abruptly turned to his back and face Ohno once again. “I’ll leave this umbrella on this bench at the same time like today. You can get it or simply ignore it, I don’t mind.”
The man gave Ohno his smile again before he walked out of the bus station shelter, the white umbrella was held tight in his small hamburger-like hand. Something in Ohno snapped as he saw the back figure of the stranger holding his umbrella that made him stood up from his seat and run to chase the stranger, not caring about the rain that making him wet.
“Wait!” Ohno shouted out loud, trying to overdo the sound of the falling rain so that his voice could be heard by the stranger walking in front of him. “Please, wait!”
The stranger stop walking and turned around, surprised to see Ohno, drenched from top to bottom, running up to him. When Ohno reached his side, he offered Ohno half of the space of the umbrella that he didn’t use so that Ohno could at least get sheltered from the rain.
“What are you doing, running in the rain like that?” Nino scolded the umbrella man. “It was not healthy and-“
“Your name.” Ohno cut the man in the middle of his speech. “I need to know your name.”
The stranger didn’t answer for a moment until he smiled again at Ohno, this time it’s not a smirk, a mischievous smile or a childish smile like he had given to Ohno just now, but a real warm smile that made Ohno’s heart did a sommersault.
“My name is Ninomiya Kazunari.” The stranger finally answered. “You better remember that.”

It’s another sunny day for Ohno Satoshi as he headed outside to meet with his best friend, Jun, to go to a department store to buy another gift. This time, it’s a gift for Jun’s boyfriend, Sho. Last month, Ohno couldn’t go with Jun to the department store because he was drenched in rain from head to toe for a reason that he couldn’t even remember. Thanks to that he was rewarded with high-fever and had to rest on the bed for more than a week. He was also scolded by Jun for running in the rain though Ohno was sure that he brought his umbrella with him that morning. Why he suddenly lost his umbrella was beyond his imagination.
Ohno reached the bus station without any accident on the way, no sudden thunder, no sudden rain, as he took a seat on the available bench there, waiting for the bus that would take him to Jun’s apartment to come. Ohno was staring at the sky with blank look on his face, when someone tapped his shoulder from behind. Ohno turned to find a man wearing a black jacket standing there, a childish smile on his face. Ohno could only blink.
“Today is sunny so I couldn’t offer my umbrella to you.” The man started the talk and when he mentioned the umbrella did Ohno realized that the man was holding a white umbrella. The white umbrella the man was holding looked very familiar to him though Ohno couldn’t explain why he felt so. “But I could offer you coffee and cookies.”
“Eh?”
“My home is near here and I can guarantee you that I make the best coffee in this country.”
Ohno blinked again. “What the-“
“My name is Ninomiya Kazunari by the way.” The man reached out his hand which Ohno shook just for being polite though Ohno felt another déjà vu hit him when the man said his name. It felt like he had heard that name before. But when? And where?
“So? What’s your answer?” The man, still holding onto Ohno’s hand, asked with a genuine smile on his face, a smile that made Ohno’s heart jumped a little. A smile that was so warm that remind Ohno of something that he had forgotten but feel like he should remember soon or he would lose something really important in his life. So without a second thought, Ohno answered, “I’d love to come with you.”
Jun could go shopping alone. Ohno could make an excuse that he forgot the appointment again. Because Ohno somehow knew that the man in front of him, the man who reached out his hand to him offering him coffee and cookies, was much more important than anything else in this world.

“I hope so.”

Though not long after that, Ohno forgot all about his meeting with Ninomiya, no matter how many times they’ve met in that bus station. Ohno never knew that Nino had several white umbrellas with Ohno’s name written on it. They always met when it was raining and Ohno always lend Nino his umbrella but Ohno never remembered their encounter, not even once. Nino was shocked when the second time they meet, Ohno looked at him like he was some stranger he wouldn’t bother talking to. Nino was hurt by the way Ohno treated him, thinking that he’s not even important enough for Ohno to remember, not knowing that Ohno really did forget him not because he wanted to but because he didn’t have any other choice.
They met several times after that and the conversation also the cycle kept on repeating Nino felt like he’s repeating the day. But not even once Ohno could remember him. So this time, by inviting Ohno to his house, Nino hoped that Ohno would remember about him and all of their past encounters. Because their meeting was a fate that happened because of one white umbrella in the middle of a rainy day.
