She swiftly grabs his shirt and starts tying rubber bands around it, dipping it into the blue dye as soon as she's finished and leaving it there.]

Mmm? Oh, it's very simple. Take the clothing you want to dye, tie some knots around it - around five is good, but you can have as little as two and as many as you like. And then, you dip it in the dye you want for about...oh! Fifteen minutes, repeating if you want different colors. Of course it gets more complicated than that, you can add marbles or rubber bands if you want but that's it at it's simplest!

Basically, darling, you use the knots and the marbles to create designs. And when you dip the clothing in the dye, it leaves the areas knotted undyed because it dyes the string, and not the fabric of the clothing. Same with the marbles, except the marbles cause different shapes to be undyed in the fabric.
