freewriting with direction, or 'mostly' freewriting

Jun 20, 2005 00:59

so in my continued pursuit of writing skill, i have decided to take direction with my flow of words, less like a river, more like an artist's brush painting the path of my own private river (airfield/idaho)

what follows is part one of of how i have come to date Marie. subtitle: On who i was a week ago sorry it's so long, i figured that's another ( Read more... )

crap, i don't it to be pretentious...

do you mean it's demanding distinction where it deserves none, or that's its overly showy? or both?

I didn't say that you did, but that is how it came off to me. And I could very well be alone in that interpretation.

Writing is about finding your own voice, not trying to find the voice you think other people want to hear. Or at least that is my view on it. It seems that it should be easier to find your own voice when talking about yourself introspectively, but it hardly ever is. To put it another way, is this the kind of thing you would write if you knew no one else would read it?

righto, thanks for the clarification. and i didn't mean to imply that you did imply that, but you know how the internet destroys inflection.

i awkwardly tend to absorb other styles, based upon what im reading at the time, this is most likely related to dave eggers.

and writing for myself entirely does look a little different, but they always taught us to write for our audience. esp. if i ever want to publish a book- it'd have to say what i want to say, but in words that other people can understand me best.

so this stuff is written with some audience in mind, not just myself. writing to myself tends to lack punctuation and jumps around even more hehe.

i think you have to ask yourself what your primary goal is: to write as a means of entertaining others or to write as a means of exploring yourself. the conflict comes when you present this as the latter, but yet you are also seeking approval from your audience. so i guess it depends on why you're writing. it seemed to me that, and this could be misinterpretation on my part, you were initially freewriting as a means of finding out more about yourself, why you do the things you do, etcetera. but if you're writing to encourage criticism and feedback, that is a bit different, and could account for the disparity of your intended tone and your actual tone. note: i'm not saying that the above two goals cannot co-exist. but you should know which is primary.

something to think about, i suppose.

this present freewriting is an attempt at coexistence of those goals. wanda often says that we each understand things but putting it into words for others to grasp is the hard part. i think that's what's going on here- i'm putting all the thoughts, and yeah, putting my thoughts to print organizes them for me (and you).

hmm and as freewriting, it's kind of amusing to me that i already slant toward the entertaining, instead of just straight facts.

i'll try to keep that in mind though - maybe i'll do one with each focus applied exclusively?
