Where's that subject line from? Dave Chappelle would know, but for some unfathomable reason, he doesn't read this lj.
I finished Roots the other day. Wow. The scholarship is unimaginable and heartbreaking, and though there are flaws throughout the book, they only served to further endear the book. Everyone should read it. In fact, they should teach it in school because slavery has been the most important and affecting part of this country's history. It affected our Constitution, laws, expansion in the early years, and later jobs, race relations... It angers, no, enrages me to no end that we will read Heart of Darkness in school, but not Roots or Things Fall Apart. Or that we'll read the Great Gatsby and Huck Finn ahead of Roots, which is not to say that they're bad, but that Roots is more important. But whatev, I seriously doubt that anyone will really start reading Roots because of this recommendation. Maybe Liz, and maybe Atilla will start but then go partying in Spain, but I doubt anyone else. Goddamn white-centric lit. the American school system forces into us.
On a less angering note, check out The Steets. And for those uiuc'ers reading this, tell Mat Brown to listen to it. One man band from England. Soooo good. Mix of Portishead and Prodigy.
