I just had this idea today...

I hope it wasn't already obvious but...

What if something in the Potter house was one of the Horcruxes? Voldy would make them for big important deaths that he did right? So... wouldn't it make sense that he would use the death of Harry's parents as one of them?

Just a thought...

Funny you said that--I wrote a fanfic where Lily's wedding ring is a horcrux. I know how silly that sounds, but I had the same thought you did, that he would have made a horcrux after the murder of Harry's parents. If he had time, of course. I think it's more likely that he had all 7 of them before he went after the Potters, however.

Hmm...that's a good theory! It's mentioned that Harry wants to visit Godric's Hollow before he attempts to conquer Voldemort. Maybe, while visiting, he'll discover a horcrux? I guess we'll just have to wait and see!

That would be really cool, but the problem is he only picks objects he thinks are full of ancient magic and of importance.

...

Unless we find out more about James's family, and he infact has something that has been passed down in his family... and him having that may be another reason why Voldemort chose Harry instead of Nevill....

OR because Voldemort undied or whatever when he was there, the horcrux he selected is still there!

Hell yeah! I love this theory!

I'm sure I read somewhere the J K Rowling said Voldemort saved Horcruxes for important murders and was therefore planning to make one by killing Harry (ie not his parents). When the murder went wrong he instead made Nagini into a Horcrux when he killed the caretaker in book 4. Then again that might actually be Dumbledore's theory in the books and it might still be possible that he did make a Horcrux when he killed Harry's father. After all there must have been an important reason to kill James, since he was so determined to kill him but wasn't bothered about killing Lily.

I think you read that in HBP. Didn't it hint at it somewhere in there?

I thought he turned nagini into a horocrux way before that.. Would he have the strength to perform such magic when he was in his "half life?"

I've found the quote about it now. Page 473 of HBP. Dumbledore says:
"Voldemort was at least one Horcrux short of his goal of six when he entered your parents house."
"I am sure he was intending to make his final Horcrux with your death."
"After an interval of some years, however, he used Nagini to kill an old Muggle man, and it might have then occured to him to turn her into his last Horcrux."
Obviously that doesn't mean he definitely did, after all even Dumbledore gets things wrong, but that was his theory anyway.
