Little boy in army greens
Not at all like he seems
Likes to stomp and make a noise
Also likes to play with toys
I'm ashamed to admit it but I actually searched the net tonight for answers on how to go about dating a geek. Problem was, Stu my quasi-boyfriend who I'm in mutual tolerance with, doesn't actually fit into the typical geek stereotype. He is his own unique nerd!
See, to look at him, a strapping young man who is (although he doesn't realise it) a bit of a looker, you wouldn't in a million years pick him as an all out geek. For starters he is military all over. Once clad in his cammo gear and babbling about tanks he's all very macho. Coupled with his day job as a groundsman where he spends a lot of time lifting heavy things. There's really no indication that secretly he's painting fantasy themed armies in his shed at lunch.
Also added to his un-geeky bloke side is his love of drinking, lap dancers and death metal.
This is where the half-neanderthal ends and the domestic metrosexual comes in. The guy can cook, loves a good home cooked meal and is quite adamant that his flatmate must be fed properly. He is also adept at ironing, even if it is just his uniform, that's still more impressive than my girlfriends. Metrosexually speaking he's a little vain, worries about crinkling his t-shirt and having his hair mussed. He prefers strawberry over chocolate and even uses my expensive fancy face wash in the shower. (sprung!)
As if his persona wasn't confusing enough you then get the geek. His Warhammer obsession above all else would be sad if it wasn't so adorable that he's so passionate about it. He's poured so much time, money and effort into it that its hard not to be impressed when he shows you a photo of his immaculately painted imperial or tau army. (Oh yes, I know the difference.) He's an obsessive gamer too and plays Guild Wars for hours. (I tried to play once to appease him but we just ended up having an argument which was far funnier than it had any right to be...but I digress...and besides I've taken up Rome:Total War now and it makes him happy. The geekiness doesn't end there though, included is his love of animation (granted I share this but not in an 'I can quote entire episodes of the Simpsons' kinda way) and anime too. I was lucky enough to see his Star Wars obsession in full force when we watched 'The Empire Strikes Back' a few weeks back. He joyfully quoted all the Han Solo/Princess Leia conversations to me complete with sound effects!
And I guess I should throw in the fourth side to his personality...the lover...from what I read in my 'research' they're supposed to be nervous but know exactly what they want because they don't get it often but have had plenty of time to think about it. I'd say this is mostly true but in Stu's case...oh he knows what he's doing and there's no fear there...
So, while he is a big old geek it doesn't actually define him in a '10 reasons to date a geek' kinda way. Perhaps he's like some sub form of geek...a domesticated bloke-geek or a metrodomestic manchild or something.
Anyway, I guess the main thing is that although these increasingly geeky tendencies are coming to light, they're just making me like the idiot more and that's really all that matters.
