Well, they already have people with almost no training making espresso even without that steamer thing. It's called Starbucks at WWU. :( WORST COFFEE. EVER. (I am still scarred for life).

I admit to not knowing that much about coffee, and to having a knee-jerk reaction to people like the one who wrote the article. It bothers me to hear people who go on and on that the obvious result of having better tech is that x art WILL be replaced. It's just not always true. I mean, that's like saying "now that there's digital art, nobody will make acrylic paintings anymore" or being stupid like the American animation industry and choosing 3-D animating entirely over 2-D while other animation industries (COUGH COUGH JAPAN) just use both and make prettier movies.

I also don't like that in most cases, articles like these are begging - even if subtly - for a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's like the guy is saying "you're all doomed, and your style of cafe is doomed, so you should just give in now (ps, which would doom you)."

I think that running a cafe is sort of like writing: YES, it is a problem to completely ignore the market, but I also think that it's a problem to play entirely to the market and erase what makes it special. I have the same issue with writing novels. Yeah, you have to know what editors are buying, but even though they're mostly (and people) are mostly buying insipid romance novels, I can't see any point in myself adding more of what already exists.

Okay. It's 4am and I am probably talking out of my ass now. @_@ In short, I hope this article-person-thing is wrong because a) I LIKE the idea of baristas who have competitions and get all awesome at each other: I don't want that to go away from the world and b) Um. Same reason as a.
