The second Knox County Symphony concert took place Saturday night, and I think it went off very well. There were no major hiccups or mistakes, which is something of a concern when there are soloists. It’s hard to predict how they’ll react to the audience, and I’ve been in more than one concert where it became painfully obvious that the soloist was nervous. Lauren did take the six eight section in her solo at a record pace, but the daunting first stand of cellists were prepared and equal to the task. And she sounded lovely. There were a few tense moments at the beginning of the Moldau, which admittedly is a very difficult woodwind opening, but happily our “musical kayak” remained afloat. So for the most part, things went very smoothly, and there was even a record attendance - over five hundred people came. Which, given that there’s a relatively steep ticket price (three dollars for a student ticket, ten for non-students), is really excellent.

“Feel the Spirit” was also this weekend. I have to say, although it will never be my favorite musical experience, the choir seemed to enjoy themselves, and the audience clapped at the end, and I’ve been hired again for Easter. So who am I to judge? (Although I’m going to have to request that he doesn’t do the fancy lighting again that involves turning off the lights so I can’t read the music).

Both of them, even “Feel the Spirit,” were firm reminders of something which I have always known, but which is good to have affirmed - I really, really love playing in orchestras. I suppose I must look pretty foolish when I play, people tend to comment on it, but it’s because I’m having a fabulous time. I can remember being in middle school and watching the high school orchestra and thinking how much fun it would be to be in the center of all of that, and I think I’ve spent every orchestra experience since feeling lucky that I have the chance to be there.

In other news: my Valentine's Day is being delayed until this weekend, when I will be in Boston. Yay!
