dear journal-
I have to decide. thats something at which I am no good.
I got a fellowship to go to Cambodia this summer for two months for language and cultural studies through the Center for Khmer Studies. They pick 5 undergraduates from the US and 5 from France (?) to go do this fellowship program there. it is all expenses paid, even the flight and insurance. it sounds pretty plush.
but I have already made plans to go to Nepal and my host family would be so disappointed if I reneged. and I have already accepted $2,000 from my school to go to nepal. The situation is getting worse in nepal, but my host family says it should be fine by the time i get there.
Also, to apply for the cambodia grant, i had to write up a research project proposal. I just went back and read what I wrote, and here is the abstract.
"Abstract- I intend to record and evaluate the self-narratives of a small number of teenage Cambodian monks living near the city of Siem Reap. I hope to determine what effect, if any, the recent and ongoing globalization of Siem Reap has had on the personal identities of these monks. Taking a true human developmental approach, I will take the current sociocultural and historical environment of Cambodia and Siem Reap into account. I expect that my interaction with these monks in their everyday life through volunteer English tutoring will also provide me with insights to analyze their personal narratives."
What the hell does that mean? I dont really think I'm capable of doing any such thing. I don't know why they didn't call me on my bullshit proposal. they should have.
I think I will go to cambodia and skip into nepal for a few weeks, if i can manage all that and tactfully give the money back to my school.
