Urge your Senator to Protect Nursing Home Residents!

Sep 09, 2008 09:23

Something I've been working on and hope you will take a moment to act on.

When senators return to Washington next week from their long summer vacation, a key Senate committee will vote on a bill to prevent nursing homes from forcing residents and their families into "binding mandatory arbitration" - biased, secretive forums where nursing home corporations pick the "judges" who decide cases against them. Instead of striving to provide the best care for residents, nursing homes are working to immunize themselves from accountability.

We trust nursing homes to make sure our loved ones are in a safe environment where they eat their meals on time, receive their prescribed medications, and have attentive care. But if we can't hold nursing homes accountable for wrongdoing, then they can focus on profits at the expense of quality care, putting our loved ones at risk of serious injuries and even death.

We are writing you today because your help is critical to passing this crucial legislation!

Members of the Judiciary Committee who have not yet announced firm support or opposition:

Diane Feinstein (D-CA)
Joe Biden (D-DE)
Ben Cardin (D-MD)
Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)
Charles Schumer (D-NY)
Arlen Specter (R-PA)
Charles Grassley (R-IA)
Lindsey Graham (R-SC)

Take action now to urge your senator to hold nursing homes accountable!
