But a poorly paced show where the HIGHLIGHT, THE HIGHLIGHT MIND YOU is Paris Hilton (who continues to have no acting ability whatsoever) but she was still the FREAKING HIGHLIGHT of the show

See, now this is interesting to read. Because I was struck by how much of a non-highlight it was. Paris Hilton's itty bitty part seriously was hardly a blip on my radar. I thought it was slightly hysterical for Kripke to make her a monster even though her unneededly gory death was pretty ridiculously cringeworthy, but that was about it.

I'll be the first to admit this episode was pretty dull outside of following up on the boys storyline. But that's pretty much always SPN on MOTW eps. Yet there are always gems that just make the episode so worth it I can't even care. Case in point? Perhaps the S1 episodes I rewatch the most? Bugs and Route 666. Light crappy ass episodes on the whole, but the character issues dealt with are just such gems for me, with little bits that are so fun, that I can't even seem to care. Same with Roadkill in S2, Red Sky in S3, and Yellow Fever in S4 (one I severely hated at the time, and is still the shoddiness put together ep I think this show has done MOTW wise, but the meta importance of the whole just golden). Horrible eps, but the general character point hit just makes them enjoyable. That seems like how this show rolls.

Honestly, I have read a lot of posts where people really liked Paris. Seriously. And I have to say, she broke up the lame fan killing monster stuff that was dragging so I give her that.

Again, I think if I was really focused on Sam I would look at it the way you do. I honestly think the show has over the years developed into Samgirls and Deangirls. Hey I was on TWOP last night before the moderator went in and deleted a bazillion posts and it was pretty evenly divided. Samgirls loved it, Deangirls didn't.

I don't think you are just a Samgirl. I think you love both the boys but your sympathies are more with Sam. Am I right? Maybe I'm wrong. I will freely admit that I am a Deangirl and I look at the show through Dean's perspective. So I'm obviously going to react more to the Ruby line than you will.

But at the end of the day . . . . I want it equal. I would love to love them both. Do you feel it's equal? Because I could be wrong but I really, really don't understand how they are equal now. I will freely admit it if I'm just not getting it. Because I really do want to love them equally.

I hate to feel so meh and conflicted about a show I adore. But I almost feel like Sam is being given a free pass this year and everything is being whitewashed away. Or it just could be that Julie Siegel just kind of blew this one.

Ha, I have sorta sounded like a Sam!girl recently, I guess. Which is weird for me really, I remember my post-S1 perception of Sam was solely 'good hair/bad hair'? But his characterization used to be so flat, and since they've been really doing things with it again I just want to see it go somewhere. And I think his 'what if we could win' speech in 4.12 really got to me. Now, I really just want better for them. For both of them.

But at the end of the day....I want it equal. I would love to love them both. Do you feel it's equal? Because I could be wrong but I really, really don't understand how they are equal now. I will freely admit it if I'm just not getting it. Because I really do want to love them equally.
Perhaps we're all overstating it to say it IS equal now. More, they've signaled that they're moving to that because they've now discussed equal footing. But I think identifying the main root of the problem between them for so long can be nothing but a good thing for both boys' growth. Because it's just as unhealthy for Sam to continue being pushed around by Dean as it is for Dean to need a little brother to take care of and boss around. I don't doubt that this old pattern will be hard for them to break, but it is a goal to work for, and that's always a good thing. In the meantime, I do think all these issues will be worked through in one way or another. :)

But I almost feel like Sam is being given a free pass this year and everything is being whitewashed away.
But if we are talking about equal, Dean's been alot harder on Sam with this than Sam ever was on Dean selling his soul for him. If we're talking about free passes, Dean's lasted pretty long into S3, and we're only on ep 5 here right now. All in good time...
