[series]: Gundam SEED
[character]: Lacus Clyne

[character history / background]:
Here and here would be good summaries.

[character abilities]:
The SEED factor (Superior Evolutionary Element Destined-factor), is a yet unproven theory about the next step in human evolution. Both Coordinators and Naturals can possess the "SEED", and those who do have the SEED are able to go into SEED mode: An ability of people with the SEED factor that allows them to have faster reflexes and increased information processing. SEED mode is triggered when a person puts their full resolve into a goal during battle. Lacus is one of these people who possesses the SEED factor: She goes into SEED mode after giving out a speech about the purpose of war while in the control room of the Eternal. However, any abilities beyond that are never shown in the series.

Lacus is also a talented singer and idol of the Coordinators. Additionally, she is shown to be an adept commander when she boards the stolen support ship Eternal.

[character personality]:
When Lacus is first introduced, she is shown as a polite, well-meaning, and rather clueless girl. She constantly wears a smile on her face, and is kind and pleasant towards everyone in the Archangel, even if they are technically an enemy ship. Although she is aware of the fighting, she still appears to be cheerful, which gives the impression that she doesn’t know the extent of the war between the Coordinators and Naturals.

She senses the kindness in Kira almost instantly, and when he claims that he’s treating her nicely because he’s a Coordinator like her, she says instead that Kira is kind because he is himself. This shows that Lacus sees beyond the terms "Coordinator" or "Natural", and that beyond the smile is a person that’s wiser than she appears to be.

And throughout the series, Lacus does show wisdom beyond her age. She is kind towards most people despite race or affiliation, and attempts to understand them as best as she could. When she sees people suffering, she grows concerned even if the person tries to harm her. She sings to spread the feelings of the Coordinators to everyone else. She also acts as a guide to those who seem lost in the midst of war; oftentimes, she asks questions not to satisfy her own curiosity, but for that person to reflect on those questions themselves. She wants people to find their own reason for fighting, because she believes that every person is different: That is why everyone is able to meet different kinds of people in the world. She constantly asks "What is it we are fighting for?" to everyone, with the knowledge that, even if people are different, they all hold the same basic ideal of a better world. This is why she thinks Athrun and Kira shouldn't be fighting with each other: because they both want the same things, but they've both lost sight of why they are fighting in the midst of their sorrows and the deaths of their friends and comrades.

She is aware that in battle, soldiers can perish, they must plan strategically and not make rash decisions. However, she would still like to limit deaths as much as possible. Her ideal world is a place where no one kills and is killed, and the end goal is to give up fighting for the sake of the future's happiness. To many, she's strong and unwavering, and that is who she really is. However, this doesn’t mean that Lacus doesn’t have her own share of grief. Even if she tries not to show it to everyone, she also cries when something bad happens to her, such as when she learned that her father had been assassinated.

Although Lacus gives off an air of being charming and seemingly harmless, she can stand her ground and give out orders when necessary. She’s determined and decisive, and she will fight in her own way, initially to destroy the weapons of mass destruction, but with a long-term goal of peace and understanding between Naturals and Coordinators. If anything, Lacus is someone who knows herself well and is confident about her decisions, unwavering in her beliefs and values. The reason she fights is to stop people from hurting and killing each other through weapons of mass destruction that would eventually lead to the devastation of humanity, just because they have lost sight of why they are fighting. She hopes that one day, both Coordinators and Naturals could live in mutual understanding, accepting each other because of their differences, and not despite it. In this way, they can be able to live in happiness, in a place where they don't have to destroy each other.

End of SEED OVA: “In the Valley of Stars”

[journal post]:

Voice;
Oh? My, my! I do not seem to be at the orphanage at all.

What is this? [A short pause as some footsteps are heard, moments of static and rustling as she fiddles around with the communicator.]

Oh! I believe I understand these controls now.

A pleasant evening to everyone. My name is Lacus Clyne, and I appear to be lost. I would greatly appreciate if anyone could tell me where I am, and a little bit more about this unique place. Thank you very much.

[third person / log sample]:

A shooting star flashes across the sky, a streak of white against midnight blue, and Lacus thinks that it is indeed a wonderful sight to behold.

It is nice for Cagalli and Athrun to drop occasional visits now that the war is over. Talking to them is always delightful, even if sometimes, the news they bring to the orphanage is not as pleasant. Perhaps it is unrealistic to believe that everything will be alright once the battle is over, especially when people are so different, but it is still rather sad that people cannot reconcile their differences when everyone is aiming for the same end goal. Even back in the battlefield, everyone had been fighting to end the war, right? Why had it turned out so terribly? Why do people have to create weapons that only hurt each other, and commit the same mistakes over and over? Had the sacrifices not been enough? What future would humankind have if they seek to mutually destroy each other? Is this truly happiness?

But even in the midst of hardship, something good always happens. Which reminds her: Kira and Athrun should be returning soon, shouldn't they? She smiles as she recalls watching Athrun head to the shorelines of the beach, where Kira had wandered to earlier. Seeing them talk openly and freely to each other again despite everything that happened between them is a good thing. She's happy that they had both been able realize why they had been fighting, even if she always knew, deep inside, that they would. After all, they are both truly kind and caring people.

She only wishes that more people also remembered the reason behind their fights. Back then, she tried her best to open the eyes and hearts of everyone, to ask them what they truly desire, but some had been simply too focused on their hatred to reflect on their true goal. Instead of focusing on creating a better future, they created weapons to destroy, intending to wipe out the opposing faction: Fellow humans. Because that's what everyone is, beyond the labels, beyond being a "Natural" and "Coordinator", right? It's a sad reality that they would need to fight to destroy these weapons of mass destruction, but she could not have just stood idly by, couldn't she?

For indeed, even if fighting is a sorrowful thing, if it comes to fighting then they will do so. That is what Kira told her, isn't it? Even when he was crying, he told her he would return to the battlefield. To stop the war that would eventually cause the ultimate destruction of humanity, the only world they have. She felt the same way too, which is why she charged into the battlefield herself.

After all, the world isn't something that someone can simply create.

"My, my, it's getting a little late, isn't it?" she tells the children surrounding her, smiling warmly. "We should be getting back inside."

Her smile still hasn't faded as she tucks the children into bed. She knows they have their own sorrows as orphans of war, but if she can reach and touch their hearts through her song, then she will continue to sing. So she sings to them as she always does:

"On this quiet night, I'm waiting for you
I've let go of what happened back then, and thus my smile has returned
Since then, just a little time has passed
but it seems our memories have already become fonder

"In the place where the stars fall,
I was constantly wishing that you would be smiling
We may be far apart right now, but I know we'll be able to meet again

"On a quiet night..."
