In the series Fullmetal Alchemist, alchemists seek to understand and make use of the universal principles behind life, death, matter, energy, and change; they are scientists first, artists second --- and I am, too.

I see Life itself, my life, and especially my sobriety, as an act of alchemy - first, that perfectly ordinary and at the same time completely miraculous fusing of spirit, energy, and matter into this body ... then the substance of my very soul, WHO I AM, transmuted by-me-yet-not-by-me into something completely different - lead into gold - for "the same man will drink again".

This beautiful screencap (one of my 2 faves in the whole show) is from the pilot episode: there is a young girl being deceived by a priest who has convinced her he can bring back her dead boyfriend. In a fit of emotion, Ed, the main character, tears off his cape and shirt to show her part of the price HE paid for attempting to bring the dead back to life - he lost his right arm, which is now made of automail.

Even though he keeps his automail covered most of the time (long sleeves and gloves), he feels so upset by her plight and the priest's deception that he has to show her physical proof that she is being lied to, that bringing back the dead doesn't work, that she must move forward instead of dwelling on what is lost ... he says, "I told you, Rose ... Get too close to the sun and you burn."
