Been doing a lot of genealogy research this week. Found a picture of my great-great grandfather at a Civil War Soldiers reunion. He and his father both served under Fielding Hurst in the 6th TN Cav. To quote the product copy for
Hurst's Wurst by Kevin McCann:
It was described by one Confederate soldier as an ignorant posse of men led by vicious and unprincipled leaders who were the scourge and terror of the lower Eastern Counties of West Tennessee, and were as thoroughly detested and hated as any band of marauders who ever disgraced the name of soldiers.
Well, then. This explains SO much about my family. I imagine they were real popular after the war (seeing as how they lived right there where they marauded.)
On the other side of the family, I discovered that we're related (by marriage, thank goodness) to two racist murderers in North Carolina (and the father of one of those murderers - who had murdered a Senator in a KKK-related killing - was appointed guardian over my great-great-great-great grandfather when his father died early. That really explains a LOT about the men in my family. A LOT.)
On the up side, they were mostly a bunch of long-lived bastards.
