ITsssssss baaaaack: Whispers

Aug 25, 2007 13:50

Some of you may remember the wank about the Whispers archive. Those who need a refresher, I posted on the kerfuffle here a year ago.

I had to raise a huge stink back then to get my account deleted from Whispers after hearing about how they had lifted the text of stories from archives--mostly AFF--without authors' permission. After duly involving myself in WIKTT wank and (with larilee's permission) using a parody she had written to shame "Hermione" I finally got the account deleted. Well, it's there again--with two stories of mine listed, Janus and Book of Shadows--though as you'll see if you click, you'll get a blank page. Other authors, however, report that their links work and that their stories are there. Not sure if I'm one of the lucky ones or not...

Go to Whispers to find out if you've been ripped off--especially if you've written any Snape/Hermione or Snape/OFC. I'm listing the search page because the site--I'm sure deliberately--does not have an authors page where you could quickly see who has been ripped off. I'm posting this on my LJ to help increase the odds as many people learn about this as possible. I first learned about this from a post by scatteredlogic here--she got the heads up from renitaleandra.

I tried sending this email but the site won't allow it:

You have no business adding an account in my name--I asked--and got--my account deleted about a year ago after this archive stole the stories of authors w/o their permission. And here I am back again?

I want my account gone. As in there being no harmony bites here when I check tomorrow.

A friend just reminded me to be extra careful even going to the site. The guy has claimed to be a programmer, has no ethics, and last wank posted real names and financial info of fans who tangled with him on lists and forums out of sheer spite and had no apologies when called on his behavior--and there are scripts that can lift info right off your computer. So be careful out there and keep your firewalls high and your virus checker fired up.

ETA I found contact information on scatteredlogic's post. Email the site owner at stephanie@thepotionsmaster.net to get your account deleted. I just did, and that email didn't bounce.

Also, lady_karelia found an authors' page:
