Fanfics Posted for Download Without Permission

A friend found some of her fanfics on a site, seemingly lifted from Archive of Our Own and offered for download, possibly for sale since you need a credit card. She alerted me she had found some of my fanfic there too. I sent them a note this morning, and the fics are already gone, but it occurred to me others might have had their fanfic hijacked ( Read more... )

I found some of my work there yesterday and told them to sod off. So my stuff's no longer there at least, but yuck, what a slimy site. There were supposedly 41 comments on one of my stories that I couldn't see without setting up a "free" account with my credit card, which just screams scam.

Also *waves* HI! Nice to see you, even under annoying fic-stealing circumstances!

*waves back*

Yeah, that credit card part sends up huge red flags--and I thought it bad enough when fics were lifted and put on a *free* site. At least they don't put up a fight--seems as soon as you tell them take it down, they're off.

At least one person I know had stuff up yesterday that's gone today without having to complain, and she's positing that they dumped all the AO3 fics. Regardless, I'm glad my stuff's no longer on that icky icky site.

Incidentally, I also discovered that one of my fics is listed on Goodreads with Mundungus42 as the author. Fortunately, I think that was added to their book database by someone who wants it on their reading list. Since the story link leads back AO3, where I posted it, I'm letting it stay there. :D

Aww--yeah, that I'd just consider a compliment, not a hijacking :-)

There was some righteous wank about fandom etiquette on Tumblr about fic showing up on Goodreads. It's funny, this is so much more egregious, but because Goodreads has greater name recognition, more people were upset about it. Now that the scope of eBooks Tree's chicanery is starting to come to light, I think the wank is fitting.
