Corey has been deployed for about a week now and I've already faced my first crisis. The furnace stopped working on Friday, so I spent the weekend cuddled in a fleece blanket in my 50 degree house. Contrary to popular belief, it does get cold in Southern California, especially when it rains and you live in a house that was built in the 1940s with no insulation. I've been sleeping with about 4 blankets and using the dogs for their body heat.
I debated on whether to call my landlord this morning and to make an appointment with some kind of handyman, as my regular guy
(ie: my husband) is currently unavailable for consultations. I also attempted to call my father, but I only reached his voice mail. So, I decided to step it up and try to fix the ancient furnace myself as I do have some mechanical experience, thanks to my time in the Navy. I crawled under the house with a headlamp, some gloves, and a screwdriver and I got to work. After some tinkering, I went back inside and tested everything. I am proud to say that I now have heat. I'm crossing my fingers that whatever I did holds on through the winter.
