Some days seem longer than others -- it is a time worth note when those days also tend to coalesce with the ones that take up, in actuality, the least amount of energy. Today was mostly spent touring around downtown LA with Angie and Jess. They enjoyed it, and I got to see things I haven't seen before either (a beneficial perk to helping others and showing them around that one might benefit from remembering when the opportunity arises).
Disney Concert Hall, The Gas Company Tower, the Museum Of Contemporary Art (MOCA) -- they were all worth the trip. And taking the Metro (despite the semi-annoying jingle from the radio comercials that repeat their play in my head) was extremely easy, fun (we got to run for the first train, just to cross the tracks in order for the driver to finally be able to take off without us), and gave good opportunity for "sight seeing" LA and continued to reinforce both Jess and I's conviction that beautiful nature is often starkly contrasted with the present contributors to smog. I'm almost convinced that my sister and I should eventually venture a joint photography activism. Now THAT would be fun. :)
At the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (a store that seems to be concentrated in southern California), I had a wondrous green tea called "Japanese Cherry". Of course, I seem to be on a green tea kick of late, but if you enjoy it as well, you might want to try to find something similar if you can -- it wasn't a "fruit tea" or anything of the sort, but the blossoms were used in the steeping process and lead to an almost purchase of the loose leaves.
Dinner was also a lot of fun. Jessie is a vegetarian, and Angie is mostly as well (she eats shrimp, perhaps other seafood -- I am not totally sure about the extent, though I do know that farm-raised meat is out). They've cooked for me twice now and I left both meals realizing what it's been like to miss out on a mostly vegetarian diet. If only I had a little more drive and knowledge about what works best with vegetarian recipies, I could have a lot of fun with it. The best part: carbs, tea and wine are still in! :)
They make their way back to New Mexico tomorrow, early: 6am PST. Ouch. But, they've had a long and tough "vacation". They've been on the road for the last two weeks straight and have traveled from New Mexico to southern California, all around here, up to the Sierra region of the state, across to the Bay Area for a few days (where my sister proposed!), and then back down here before returning to the wondrous decrepitency of small town New 'Miga life. They need rest, and the stability of home again. And, honestly, I understand. When the ambulance and cop helicopters make their rounds over Pasadena, one can very easily want to retreat a bit internally, and this is hard when the best place to do so is still a nine-hour drive east.
Find your soul, exchange inner knowledge for your outward trappings, and you will gain all else.
Writing from love, amidst the late-night sirens,
Michael
