So. Got this book off BookMooch a while ago, because I read Heroes by the same author and thought it was pretty good. This was, I think, one of his earlier books (but don't quote me on that). It was...um...not great.
Basically, it takes place at a Catholic school that's having a chocolate sale. This school has a secret society called the Vigils, that basically runs the school. The Vigils end up getting attached to the chocolate sale, and when Jerry Renault decides not to sell them, then this "voluntary" fundraising activity escalates into an all-out war. While it has an interesting plotline, I didn't like anybody in it. Even Jerry himself has no real reason to fight so hard against chocolate-selling. I especially disliked the ending. For a story touted as a good one for younger people (even though I didn't think the subject matter was appropriate for younger readers), I didn't like how the ending message was something along the lines of "don't bother standing up to those in power, because you are only one person and will never be able to change anything." Bleh. There's a sequel called Beyond the Chocolate War...I may take a look and see what the plotline is there. It should be easy to get, since this one always has a lot of copies on BookMooch (and PaperbackSwap...unfortunately it will be a while before I can swap it and get my much-needed points).

Up next: Still working on Writers of the Future XVI. I also brought along To Catch A Pirate...some cheesy-looking pirate romance. :P Who knows? It might be entertaining! Shut up!
