Paris Climate Change Agreement

Dec 12, 2015 19:00

Well, it looks like the industrialized nations and the developing nations were able to cobble together a draft agreement. It has no teeth: if a country does not meet its targets nothing much happens. But it's better than nothing, because a number of countries will not want to lose face. My own opinion, for whatever it's worth, is that attempts to limit carbon emissions only buy a little time. That battle was lost after the Fukushima reactor disaster (though I have to give credit to Germany for doing much better than I expected in replacing its reactors with solar and wind). If we want to keep the planet cool, we will have to create artificial clouds or pump in something like sulfate aerosols.

But here's a thought about the so-called "developing nations". China has 1) the world's most powerful supercomputer  2) an operating magnetic levitation train  3) the ability to launch humans into space. The U.S. fails all three of those tests. Which is the developing nation again?
