Kidnapped Nigerian Girls

May 03, 2014 21:23

Over 200 female Nigerian High School students remain missing after a kidnapping raid last week. The parents, understandably frantic, are protesting in the streets, demanding that somebody do something. But what? No militant group has claimed responsibility and no demands for a ransom or anything else have been made. And it isn't clear where they have been taken to: they could still be in the Nigerian jungle, or they may have been trafficked over a border to one of the neighboring countries. Without knowing where the girls are or who is responsible, practically nothing can be done.

And to find out these two critical things is a job for spying. Flying drones over Nigeria and the neighboring countries, listening in to cell phone and radio transmissions, and quietly bribing various people for information is what will get results. Will the U.S. be anxious to do that, and will other countries allow them after the Edward Snowden leaks?
