The Story That's Not Happening

Suddenly everyone seems to be coming up with reasons why the U.S. should not fire missiles into Syria. American politicians, British politicians, the U.N., protestors in the streets, above all the Russians are saying hands off. And there are some sound arguments such as having no legal justification, and the fact that any reasonable strike will be seen by the Assad regime as a mere wrist-slap. But, to borrow the phrase from "A Man For All Seasons", there is a silence that is thundering up and down Europe. In fact all around the world.

Where are the popular protests against Syria? Where are the crowds waving banners outside the Syrian embassies? The weapons were actually used by the Rebels, you say? -- oh, please. Does anybody really believe that the fragmented Rebel groups, who have been starved for weapons all this time, suddenly have sophisticated nerve gas rockets and more, the coordination to pull off an attack of that magnitude?

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing", said Edmund Burke. It is becoming painfully clear that if the U.S. doesn't strike Syria, nothing at all will be done. And that might have a far higher cost in innocent lives than any missile attack.
