By the 15th century, the mythology of the arms would trace it back to the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212 involving Sancho VII of Navarre, where the cavalry broke the chains of the caliph's slave-warriors and captured an emerald among other prizes.

что интересно - смарагд увеличился в размерах, стал шестиугольным и более вытянутым по вертикальной оси (напоминая руну Хагаль) (вообще же форма камня - как и число звеньев в цепях - изменялась с ходом времени: на самых старых вариантах герба камень круглый, в 16-18м веках это ромб или квадрат в плане, в начале 20го века камень стал восьмиугольным в плане, в каковой форме - с перерывом на годы франкизма - просуществовал доныне)
