Well I was once more lucky enough to score box tickets to
another one of Miguel Cotto's outings last Saturday at Madison Square Garden. Unlike much of the punditry I felt confident youth would prevail that night, as I correctly questioned the value of Shane Mosley's vaunted hand speed against a man almost a decade younger. Still Mosley rarely disappoints and made it a real scrap. That makes two wild superfights in as many weekends, as the Europeans Mikkel Kessler and Joe Calzaghe also threw down hard in Wales last weekend before a crowd of 80,000. Finally boxing is heating up and getting the people's attention! Already I have heard convos on the subway about Cotto and how he'll fare against either UK's Ricky Hatton or the Pretty Boy himself, Mayweather. Those two face off early December. Hopefully the UFC show between now and then can keep the streak of excellent combats going.
As for me I'm glad to report that I made my (in)glorious return to the grappling mats over the weekend, and have kept at it for the last few days. Having lost a lot of muscle in recent months I'm coming at it from a much less athletic and more methodical angle, which should improve my technique a lot once I'm back in shape. Tonight I'll also come out of retirement on the dance floor and take up a second cycle of salsas lessons with Yvette. I'm also glad to report I've been reading books and listening to podcast lectures voraciously, both geared around philosophy, spiritually, mysticism and related topics. The proverbial stars seem to be lined up for a good few months of learning. Can't ask for much more as there are few better uses for the cold and dark months ahead here in NYC.
