Arthur jumped.
Eames had almost missed it. But Arthur had definitely jumped.
It was storming outside and they had just sat down to dinner. It should have been a relaxing evening at home, but ever since the first thunderclap Arthur had been on edge. He tried to act normal, but every time there was a rumbling Eames could see Arthur flinch. After a particularly loud crack he almost knocked over his glass.
Eames had a hard time believing it, but apparently, Arthur was afraid of thunder.
He didn’t know what to say.
Most people would expect him to tease Arthur about it, but that was only because they didn’t understand. Sure they bickered almost constantly and pushed each other’s buttons like it was going out of style, that was just how they worked. They enjoyed it actually. This was different though. Arthur was actually scared, and probably embarrassed. Being afraid of thunder was most likely not something Arthur liked people knowing about him, so Eames pretended not to notice.
The storm didn’t let up while they cleared the table. And when Arthur dropped a dish, Eames helped him clean it up and didn’t say anything.
And it was still going strong when Eames settled in to read a book and Arthur worked on his laptop, silently swearing to himself as he dropped a pen under the desk after being startled by a ferocious series of booms. Eames looked up and asked Arthur if he’d stop working and come sit by him, but Arthur said no. Eames didn’t push it.
And so when Arthur clung to him a little tighter than usual after being sucked off later that night, Eames just rubbed small circles across his back and still didn’t say anything.
However, when a pair of industrial strength noise-blocking headphones arrived at their door two days later, Arthur did.
He found Eames in the kitchen and wrapped his arms around him.
“Thank you. For everything.”
Eames figured he knew what it was for, but he wasn’t going to ruin the moment with stupid questions. He pulled Artur closer, capturing his mouth in his own and kissing him slowly, holding on to him like he would never let him go. And if were up to him, he never would.
