[Harlene's Apartment] A hard day's night

Jun 20, 2005 01:26

Harlene unlocked the knob and padlock and let herself into her small Gotham studio apartment

Her nerves were shot. It had been a long first day back at work after the panic had hit the city. On top of the regular work, Dr. Crane had poisoned himself with his own fear toxin and, for a moment, Harlene had considered just watching the effects take hold. Lord, what was wrong with her? Then there was that ...that terrible thing. Did he have teeth for eyes? She couldn't even think of him without shivering.
Remembering his words, she ran to her cramped bathroom and carefully performed a self-exam on her breasts. There was nothing. It was going to be ok. What a jackass. Still...he terrified her. She couldn't even think of sleeping

She didn't have the energy to cook or the cash to order out. She found some left-over chinese in the back of the fridge and didn't even bother heating it before sitting at the computer to heat her cold, stale dinner and look for something to distract her mind.

She had started a journal earlier, and she found some amusement in reading the problems of others on Live Journal and getting a chuckle at their expense. People considered these problems? Eventually she found a community for those seeking answers, and she was just full of questions lately.

The answers she got weren't anything she wanted, though. Horrible predictions of a dark and murderous future that awaited her. Awaited her because of things she knew she was already doing wrong. Then..well then there was the talking cat.

When she finally clicked off her monitor and sat alone in the dark of her little 'home' she lay awake all night.
