Many people think different things of Hinata.
Her cousin Neji, for instance, thinks that she is a pretty swallow, well-fed and pampered within the stark walls of the Hyuuga enclave. He used to think she was weak, but now his contempt has been tempered by a tolerance for those who allow their wings to be clipped and flap haltingly, a meek shadow at their masters’ shoulders. At least Hinata doesn’t twitter-she is the silent nightingale who has lost her voice.
Her sister Hanabi does not know what to think of Hinata. So she doesn’t, unless forced to-like that time in the exams, when Hinata lay bloodied and gasping and Hanabi was faced with the frightening, thrilling possibility that Hinata might not live.
Naruto thinks Hinata is the sweetest girl he has ever met. She blushes, her voice trembles when she speaks, and her smile, tentative and hesitant, is a delicate wonder. Eyes like pearls, hair like silk; Naruto compares her to a doll he once glimpsed on a mission, shy with rose-tinted cheeks with hands clasped at her waist. Naruto had almost spent his ramen-money to buy it for Hinata but had set it down when he noticed a wind-up pin in the small of the doll’s back, bright and tinny.
There is always a price to pay for the voice of a nightingale.
