The sun rises in the east each day, scoring two red trails into the great blue bowl of the sky. On these tracks the god Helios rides, high above the Olympus peak, with only a whisper in his reins and the sporadic thunderclap of his whip to fill his ears as it snaps against burnished flanks. (His horses are silenced: it is their punishment for a thousand years and a day.) As the end of each day nears, he tugs on the reins to begin their descent; he urges them on harder, faster, hooves churning down a steep slope, their noses angled sharply to the ground. He is a father chasing after lost youth; he is a man who breeds disaster. But each day, he hauls back on his reins as those hooves fall too close to the mortal realm, for he finds that in the wake of the sun’s glare, the absence of his son’s gleeful voice is all too apparent.
