Previous Chapters “What do you want?” Nick growled.
“I want to know what your problem is. Ever since we got back from the interview you’ve been weird with me. And I mean come on dude, what was that at the table?”
“What was that at the table?” Nick whispered roughly, coming nearer. “That was me asking why the hell you were asking your ex-lover to be your best man.”
He saw the shock in Kevin’s eyes at the truth. “What?”
“Oh I think you know what I’m talking about.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Kevin whispered looking away from Nick. Nick couldn’t resist it, and was thankful that he had his height when he grabbed hold of Kevin’s shirt and shoved him against the bedroom wall.
“What? You mean you can’t remember the last 9 months where you’ve been in a relationship with Joe? Which ended when you got engaged to someone else!”
“You don’t know anything Nick!” Kevin shouted. “Now get off me!”
Nick shoved him before pushing off. “I know that Joe is hurting, and you’re just oblivious to it. He’s found out you were cheating on him. That the man he loves doesn’t love him back.”
“I love Danielle,” Kevin shouts, Nick see’s something in Kevin’s eye but forgets about it soon enough. “I never loved Joe. He was just there, he was easy.”
Nick couldn’t resist it his fist collided with Kevin’s face. “Did you just call my brother easy?”
“My nose!” Kevin screamed as he clutched his nose.
“Fuck you’re nose!” Nick said shoving against Kevin. Nick ducked when Kevin went to hit him he kneed Kevin in the stomach and Kevin groaned before tackling Nick’s legs. Nick fell to the floor with Kevin on top of him, and he flailed his arms around hitting Kevin’s face and chest.
Nick groaned when Kevin hit his face, he lifted his leg fast kicking Kevin’s groin. He felt a big weight get taken off him when suddenly Kevin was pulled off him. He looked to see his dad standing holding Kevin back. His mum looked shocked in the corner just staring at her boys. Joe moved around them and walked towards Nick. Nick groaned when he sat up, his world starting to spin, Joe placed his hands on Nick’s face.
“What is going on?” Kevin Snr shouted.
“I was giving Kevin what he deserves and he deserves so much more!” Nick shouted, squeezing his eyes shut when his head started to pound.
“Denise, take Kevin to the bathroom. I think his nose is broken. I’ll deal with Nick.” Nick felt Joe sit beside him and groaned when Joe pulled his body so he was resting his back against the bed.
Nick winced when his father grabbed his face and looked at it.
“I think you’re going to have a black eye. I think you’ve done a lot more damage to him than he has done to you.”
“That was the plan.” Nick groaned.
“Look, I don’t know what is going on. But if you want to fight that’s fine. But you don’t do it in this house do you understand?” Kevin Sr. said. Nick was glad he wasn’t shouting.
“Yes Dad.” Nick nodded.
“I’ll get you some ice for that eye.” Kevin Sr. sighed before leaving the room. Nick followed his dad before looking at Joe who was looking at him sadly.
“I’m sorry. I flipped and I know you said not to touch him but I,” Nick stopped when Joe put a finger on Nick’s lips to stop him. He moved into Joe when Joe pulled him into a gentle hug.
“Thank you.” Joe whispered into his ear.
Nick nodded and just held Joe tightly. He pulled away from his brother when his dad came back into the room with a towel wrapped around a bag of peas. Nick took it from and his dad just nodded before leaving the room again.
“Come on let’s get you on to the bed.” Joe sighed, standing up and putting out his hand. Nick groaned when he stood up and lifted up his top to see a mark on his ribs.
“I think Kevin hit my ribs at some point.”
“Just get on the bed.” Joe said pushing his shoulders gently. Nick climbed onto the bed, facing the ceiling he was really happy that Joe wasn’t mad with him. He shivered when Joe pulled his top up and pressed the back of the peas against his ribs.
“God that’s cold.” Nick gasped.
“I think that’s the point.” Joe chuckled.
Nick smiled softly, watching Joe as he gently pressed the pack against his body. “Can I ask you a question?”
“Sure,” Joe smiled.
“When you said that mum only knows that you’re in love with Kevin but why would she have cheered me on?”
“Because she thinks that he led me on even when he knew I really liked him.”
“So mum isn’t very happy with Kevin?”
“Well she is and she isn’t. She’s glad he’s got engaged and she’s glad that it shows me that he’s never going to love me, but she’s annoyed with him because of the way he did it.”
“Oh right, I see.” Nick sighed.
Nick smiled when Joe ran his hand through his curls, he noticed a look on Joe’s face. “What’s wrong?”
“What did Kevin say to you?”
Nick bit his tongue as he stared at Joe. “Nothing you need to know.”
“He must have said something to make you flip.”
“He could have said anything and I would have flipped. It doesn’t matter now.” Nick was thankful when Denise came into the room as he could see Joe was going to ask something else.
Denise didn’t say anything as she came across the room and sat on the edge of the bed. She took the peas out of Joe’s hand so she could look at Nick’s ribs, she then proceeded to look at Nick’s eye.
“Do I even want to know?” she said simply, sitting up straight and looking from Nick and Joe.
“Probably not,” Joe sighed.
“Look,” Denise sighed. “I’ve been very lucky all three of you have never really fought. Yes you’ve had the odd argument over little things. But you have never resulted to physical violence. And we will not be starting now. Do I make myself clear?” She asked looking at both of them but mainly Nick.
“Yes mum,” Nick whispered.
“Yes.” Joe nodded.
“You’re lucky we don’t have to take your brother to hospital Nicholas. He’s got two black eyes, his nose is broken and he’s got bruising coming up on his ribs. I don’t care what he did, but did he really deserve that?”
“He deserved more.” Nick simply said looking at his mother.
Nick turned away when his mother gasped. “What is going on?”
“Mom,” Joe whispered.
“Tell me now. I have two sons who want nothing to do with another one, I want to know right now what is going on.”
Nick looked at Joe and then took his hand. “She wont be mad with you.”
Nick watched as Joe looked at his mother and was surprised how scared he looked.
“Me and Kevin were seeing each other. And it ended the day he got engaged. I didn’t know he was seeing Danielle.”
The silence was uncomfortable and the tension was electric. Nick kept a hold on Joe’s hand squeezing it tightly, trying to tell him that he was here and wasn’t going to go anywhere.
“You’re right he does deserve more.”
Nick and Joe turned their heads quickly to their mother who was sitting there, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.
“What?” Joe whispered.
“I can’t believe he did that too you. I mean I thought it was just you that liked him but it obviously wasn’t.”
“We were together for nine months.” Joe chocked.
“Oh my poor baby,” Denise chocked also leaning across Nick so she could give Joe a hug. Joe buried his face into his mother's neck and Nick heard a soft sob as Joe started to cry. Nick tightened his hold on Joe’s hand and was happy when Joe squeezed back. Nick watched as his mum pulled away wiping the tears off Joe’s face before her own. She turned to Nick and ran her thumb along his cheek.
“You did always stand up for Joe,” Denise smiled before standing up. “I’ll go and get you some pain killers.”
Nick tugged on Joe so that he was lying beside him once their mum had left the room. Joe snuggled into his side and Nick held him tight. They lay in silence as Joe kept the peas pressed against Nick’s ribs.
“At least when I say, God you should look at the other guy. It will be actually true.” Nick whispered and grinned when he heard Joe laugh. Joe turned to look at him, resting his chin on Nick’s chest. Nick pressed his finger against Joe’s nose and then sat up when their mum walked in, carrying a glass of water. She handed him the glass and a strip of pain killers.
“Have two now and then another in four hours, it will help the pain.”
Nick nodded.
“You also can’t go to sleep, so you’re going to have to sit up.”
“Why can’t he go to sleep?”
“Just in case he has concussion.” Denise explained.
“We can watch Friends.” Nick grinned. Denise just shook her head and left the room silently. While Nick took the pain killers and drank some of the water Joe put in Nick’s favourite episode of Friends and then snuggled up beside him on the bed, but made sure they were both sitting up.
“I love you Nick.” Joe whispered, looking at the TV.
“I love you too.” Nick said leaning forward and pressed a kiss to Joe’s hair. Sitting back with a sigh he couldn’t help but think that a black eye was worth this.
