I was reading up on some of the things they are looking at for the next D&D money making scheme, I mean edition. A very interesting thing mentioned was the idea that not only do races give a bonus to ability scores but classes do as well.
So for your primary class will give you a bonus for your primary ability for that class.
That’s an interesting idea and makes a certain logical sense. I can see positives and negatives.
It means that certain races and classes will become even more entwined.
i.e. Race Dex +2 with Rouge Dex +2 start with +4 to primary Attribute. Why wouldn’t you? On a points array you are likely to have every character start with a 19/20 in their primary attribute.
Conversely if you don’t allow mini/max your abilities you are likely to get more rounded/levelled characters as you will have more points to spend in secondary attributes.
Say you start with the array
16 16 12 10 10 10
For a Halfling (+2 Dex, +2 Chr) rogue you may have.
Str 12 (+1) Dex 16 becomes 18 (+4) Int 16 (+3) Wis 10 Con 10 Char 10 becomes 12 (+1)
Add a +2 for rogue and it turns to
Str 12 (+1) Dex 16 becomes 20 (+5) Int 16 (+3) Wis 10 Con 10 Char 10 becomes 12 (+1)
Or if you want to spread your options and make more versatile
Start with
16 14 14 12 11 8
And go to
Str 12 (+1) Dex 14 becomes 18 (+4) Int 16 (+3) Wis 11 Con 14 (+2) Char 8 becomes 10
