jun - vice principal
sho - gym teacher
aiba - bio teacher
ohno - art teacher
nino - (props to
coffee_hanjan for this) language arts teacher
It is almost seven p.m. and Nino is still in his classroom.
He would have been on his way home as soon as the bell rang, but it was his day to cover drama club, and then he got stuck with clean-up duty in the teacher’s lounge, which should have been Aiba, but he was busy cleaning up the mess he’d made in the bio lab with his first-years. And then when Nino had come back to his own classroom to pick up some papers, he had found that his own dear class hadn’t finished their clean-up job. Any other day, he would have just left it, but this was not a mess he wanted to come back to tomorrow.
With summer approaching, there is still a good amount of light outside, filling the windows with that golden glow that is so popular in high school drama specials. Nino, however, just finds it kind of annoying right now when he’s up on a stepstool in front of said windows pulling down multi-colored streamers and balloons. Because he’s still squinting in the glare and facing away from the door, he doesn’t notice that Ohno has come in until the other man makes a curious little noise.
Nino turns to find Ohno, still in his paint-splattered smock, reading from the blackboard-something else that was mysteriously left off the cleaning schedule today-and scurries down off his stool to get between Ohno and the board.
“Hey, Oh-chan,” Nino says, skidding to a halt as inconspicuously as he can. “What’re you still doing here?”
“I was painting,” Ohno says vaguely, his gaze coming to focus on Nino as he smiles.
Nino has gotten used to the way his heart skips when Ohno does that. Really, he has. It’s been four months since Ohno started working as the art teacher at Higashi Prep, plenty of time for Nino to fall for him, flirt with him, talk himself back out of it and start trying to get over Ohno and just start acting normal around him. Although it doesn’t help how charming Ohno looks in this light. With a little smudge of paint across his forehead and going up into his hairline. Rocking absently on the balls of his feet, hands clasped behind his back like a little kid.
“Were you doing poetry today?” Ohno asks, bringing Nino back to himself, and Nino follows Ohno’s gaze to the blackboard.
“Oh. Uh, yeah.” Nino hurries over to the board, looking for the eraser. “Just some haiku, you know? Don’t know why the kids didn’t clean the board this afternoon.”
“Who did this one?” Ohno asks, points to the first poem on the board, and Nino groans inwardly.
Chocolate pudding,
Disappearing bite by bite.
Enviable spoon.
“Oh, er, I don’t remember,” Nino lies, finally locating the eraser and swiping it across the poem quickly.
“I had chocolate pudding for lunch,” Ohno murmurs, thoughtful, and Nino feels his ears go red, but doesn’t turn around.
“Weird,” he says instead. Once he’s done with the board, he goes back over to his stool and collects the pile of decorations he’d left on top of it, to throw away.
“What’s all that?” Ohno asks.
Nino waves a dismissive hand, dropping everything into the bin by his desk. “Some of the girls thought it would be cute to decorate the classroom, apparently.”
Ohno raises a curious eyebrow.
“For my birthday,” Nino continues reluctantly-he was hoping he could get by with no one realizing it was his birthday again this year. He’s pretty sure it was Jun who gave it away, the bastard, since Aiba is just plain forgetful and Sho actually respects people’s privacy. Jun, on the other hand, has access to everyone’s files and likes to make Nino suffer whenever possible.
“Why don’t you leave it up?” Ohno wants to know, sounding scandalized. The look of distress on his face is so intense it’s kind of funny, and Nino gives a little chuckle.
“I don’t really need to be reminded of how much older I’m getting,” Nino says with a rueful grin. “And I just-I don’t know, I don’t need all that attention, it’s not important.”
“You don’t…you don’t like celebrating your birthday?” Ohno asks, and his voice is suddenly tiny and hesitant.
Nino furrows his brow and stares at Ohno, trying to figure out why he’s so concerned. And then he notices how Ohno’s hands are still behind his back, arms shifting like he’s fiddling with something, and how he hasn’t turned his back to Nino once since coming into the room.
“Oh god, you brought me a present,” Nino says in a rush of realization.
“It’s not-” Ohno says quickly, “-it doesn’t matter. I’ll just-never mind.”
He starts to back out of the room, but Nino grabs him by the arm, stops him.
“No, it’s fine, I-I mean, you went to all the trouble, so…”
Nino tries for a reassuring smile. Ohno still looks skeptical, but eventually produces a small rectangular box wrapped in charcoal paper with hand-drawn decorations in the shape of Nintendo controller buttons.
“Cute,” Nino says softly, and Ohno seems slightly mollified.
“’Cause you like games,” he explains needlessly. “Well…open it.”
Nino does as he’s told, trying his best not to tear the paper. Once it’s off and placed carefully to the side, he opens the simple brown box he finds underneath.
“It’s…a tie,” he says, trying to sound excited, but really just feeling kind of confused. The necktie nestled in the box is a violent canary yellow-which Nino actually kind of likes-but he wasn’t really expecting a necktie as a birthday present from Ohno, of all people. Although Ohno’s mind works in mysterious ways at the best of times. Maybe he just asked his mom for present buying advice or something.
Ohno is rubbing the back of his head sheepishly and staring hard at the box in Nino’s hands. “I just…wanted to-here-” he says suddenly, then reaches out and removes the tie from the box, unrolling it and, before Nino has time to process what’s going on, reaching for the tie already around Nino’s neck.
“Whoa, whoa!” Nino says, backing up only to run into the edge of his desk. “Jeez, you could just say you want me to try it on.” He clicks his tongue, feigning annoyance to hide the way Ohno’s proximity is increasing his heart rate. When he’s got his tie off, he holds his hand out for the new one, but Ohno just stares at him with a strangely determined look on his face.
“Let me,” Ohno says, and the softness in his voice makes the request sound much more important than it probably is.
“I-o-okay,” Nino manages, feeling a little faint, because Ohno is still staring at him like that, and stepping into his personal space, and reaching up and over to drape the tie around Nino’s neck.
It’s not like he’s never been this close to Ohno before-Ohno is incredibly tolerant of Nino’s own disregard of other people’s personal space, and there was that one time he agreed to help Nino act out a love scene for the drama club-but this is different. This is them, face to face, all alone in a classroom, maybe all alone in the whole school, and Ohno’s breath coming shallow and too fast. There’s a faint blush, too, high on Ohno’s cheeks, but this can’t be going where Nino thinks-hopes-it’s going.
Ohno finishes the admittedly sloppy Windsor knot he was working on, and glances up at Nino. One of Ohno’s hands stays, lightly splay-fingered against Nino’s collar, while the other slides down the silk tie with a faint slippery slithering noise.
“Thanks,” Nino says, cursing the way it comes out as little more than a whisper.
“Happy Birthday,” Ohno answers. His gaze drops to Nino’s mouth, and his own lips are slightly parted, but still he doesn’t come any closer.
“Oh-chan,” Nino manages faintly. Ohno’s eyes flick back up to meet Nino’s. “I’m just, you know, taking a shot in the dark here, but…was this all an elaborate excuse to get close enough to kiss me?”
“Um,” Ohno says, definitely blushing this time.
“Because you can,” Nino says quickly, before Ohno wusses out and runs for it. “If-if you want to.”
Ohno blinks at that, then smiles, slow and sleepy. “Do you want me to?” he asks.
“I think you know the answer to that,” Nino replies peevishly.
“I wasn’t sure,” Ohno says with a little shrug. “You’re pretty friendly to everybody.”
“Not butt-groping friendly,” Nino points out.
“Really? You don’t do that with everyone?”
“Have you seen me do it to anyone else?”
“No, I guess not.”
There’s a little pause, and then:
“Why are we not kissing yet??” Nino bursts out in frustration, but barely has time to finish the sentence before Ohno leans in to press their lips together.
Nino is too busy kissing back to be embarrassed by the little whimper-like noise he lets out as his hands come up to grip Ohno’s shoulders. It takes a moment to get his bearings again, to take in the warmth of Ohno’s mouth against his own, and Ohno’s hands at his waist. But even after taking the initiative, Ohno is still shy-he slides their lips together and apart, again and again, but it’s finally Nino who deepens the kiss with an impatient huff of breath through his nose. He is rewarded by a gasp from Ohno that turns into a growl as the other man lifts Nino by the hips to put him on the desk so Ohno can step closer, between his legs and run his hands up Nino’s back to his shoulder blades.
However, just when things are starting to get really good, they are interrupted by a loud crash from the direction of the door.
Nino startles, breaks away from Ohno and looks up. His expression of guilty terror turns immediately to an annoyed scowl.
“What the hell are you three still doing here??”
Aiba grins widely. He’s got one hand over Sho’s mouth and the other around Sho’s waist, and Sho is still struggling violently in an attempt to get into the room-the scuffle must have caused the noise. As gym teacher, Sho has also been saddled with all the sex ed classes, and he has a look in his eye like he has several choice words from said curriculum in mind regarding what’s going on in Nino’s classroom right now. Jun-arguably the one who should be protesting this most loudly-just looks on with an amused smirk.
“Sorry!” Aiba says brightly. “We were just going to ask you guys out to dinner, but it looks like you’re pretty busy, so, uh…never mind!” He starts to drag Sho backwards down the hall and calls out a cheerful “Congratulations!” as he goes. Jun stays where he is a moment longer, then makes an “I’m watching you” motion with two fingers before strolling away after Aiba and Sho.
Nino sighs and drops his forehead to Ohno’s shoulder.
“Talk about a buzz kill,” he mutters. Ohno just chuckles warmly into Nino’s neck. “So what are you going to do with me?” Nino asks. “You’re stuck with me now, you know.”
Ohno just hums happily, thoughtful for a moment as his hands drift over Nino’s back. Ohno feels so warm and solid against him, and Nino wonders if he didn’t really just fall off the stool and hit his head. This is all just too good to be anything but a dream.
“Take you home,” Ohno murmurs eventually. “For some more…birthday surprises.”
Nino sits up with a look of scandalized delight. “You dirty old man!”
Ohno just smiles, looking ridiculously pleased with himself, and raises his eyebrows like a dare. Nino shoves him away and hops down from the desk. He gathers his things in record time, then hauls Ohno out the door by his wrist.
“This,” he says matter-of-factly, “is going to be the best birthday ever.”
Author's Note: omg what is this???
lotus, i hope you like it despite how ridiculous it became, and how it has more to do with ohmiya being ohmiya than being in a high school au XD;;;;
