spoilers/warnings: dharma days.
summary: Turning on her stomach, she considers the day.
JUST AS BEFORE
She wakes up to the feeling of James' toes keeping hers warm and a restlessness in the pit of her stomach. Turning on her stomach, she considers the day. There no anniversary today and she has many. They have many. Days they think about that causes them smile or that make them short with each other.
Today isn't any of these days.
The restlessness that's woken her up is stranger because of that.
James turns next to her, moving to his back, like she did. The shift of his body, the hand that drifts across her stomach, is a comfort. There's an idle romantic, practical thought that even in sleep he has her back, but it's more than just. By now every turn, every shift of her body calls one for one of his in response.
Juliet closes her eyes, covering his hand with hers. The skin of her fingers is more callous than they used to be; all the working with the tools. No soft surgeon hands anymore. How long has it been she's even been a doctor? Does it even count anymore all these years in the past?
But that's not the reason for her restlessness either, the reminder of how twisted and folded time has become for them.
"Blondie?" James' voice is low and thick with sleep. His accent is thicker like it always is in bed, or during a fight.
She turns her head, "Hmmm?"
"What's got you up and thinking like that so early?"
The answer is: she doesn't know, but her skin feels too tight around her muscles and bone. A strange adrenaline pumping through her making her want her to do something. She just doesn't know what. She was never a runner before. She used to swim in high school. In Dharma when they do swim they head down by the Pier where the sub comes every two weeks. The thought of the sub makes her tired. (It's not that anniversary either.) She never goes swimming by the pier.
"Let's take a vacation day." She blurts it out. Doesn't know where it comes from, even as the sureness of this is what she wants fills her. Still, she sits up on the bed, the sheets pooling around her, and leans over James. He reaches up to brush back her hair.
A lazy smile covers his face.
"Vacation day, huh?"
Juliet nods. "You can, can't you? We'll go…" licking her lips, she considers the places on the island she knows. The ones that even years from now she'll know. "There's a little cove I know. Let's get out here and play hooky."
James leans up, propping himself up on an elbow, eyes heavy on hers. They're so blue in the mornings. He cups her cheek and she almost wants to ask what he sees in her face. She still can't account for the knotted feeling in her belly but maybe he can see the answer in her eyes. Maybe he feels it too and that's why he says nothing.
"Play hooky, huh?" he mutters, fingers working through her hair.
She grins, "I'll make it worth your while."
He tugs her down to him, lips sliding over hers softly. "You convinced me, darling."
Juliet wraps her arms around his neck and lets him chase away some of the restlessness away with his lips, hands, and body. Later, they ask Jin to cover for James and she takes James to secluded beach Goodwin showed her years from now (and yet years ago). There in a little cove, she for a second feels is her, is her only safe spot on this island, he kisses her in the water, sand gets in his beard, and they both get saltwater tangles in their hair. By the time they head back to their house, James wrapping an arm around her waist saying he'll make dinner tonight even though it's her night the restlessness will be gone, but she won't forget how it came, out of nowhere and buried itself in her belly. Juliet doesn't believe in omens but she makes sure to press kisses into James' neck and shoulder that night, just in case.
