She sneaks into her own apartment-something she’s never felt she’s had to do; even when her dad was around sneaking just wasn’t something Ellie Bartowski did, but now she does it. Almost with ease. Chuck is in his room and she can hear the remnants of whatever game he was playing filtering through the closed door. She ignores the urge to go in and shut everything down like she did when they were younger. Maybe another night she would have but she’s exhausted.
Sarah was nice enough to drive her home, but her legs are still aching and her head is still pounding.
Flashes hurt.
Tomorrow she’ll need to sneak into Neurology and get herself an MRI because the way these flashes function they have to affect brain chemistry. They must. But that’s for tomorrow-well, today, in about five hours she amends, glancing the digital clock on Devon’s side of the bed.
Sighing, she toes off her shoes, slips off her jeans and bra too tired to change into pyjamas.
All of the spy movies Chuck has made her watch over the years lied, she thinks, slipping under the covers and shifting towards Devon.
A light sleeper, even when not on call, he blinks awake when she drapes her leg over his thigh.
“Babe?” His voice is thick with sleep and it makes her smile. Not to mention a little jealous. Sleep. “Did you just get in?” Warm hands drift over her side and back and Ellie almost groans at how good his hands feel on her aching muscles. Falling off buildings hurts too.
“Yeah,” she whispers. Frowns. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you.”
His smile flashes in the dark room, “It’s okay. Everything okay?”
Simple question, she thinks, but it makes her stiffen under his hands as she remembers what almost happened tonight.
“Babe?”
Ellie blinks. Forces herself to relax and turns to her fiancee. “Yeah, it’s just. Long night.”
From what she can see of Devon’s face she knows he’s not satisfied with her answer, but he doesn’t push. He pulls her closer and his lips brush her temple. “Okay.”
“Okay.” She shifts, gets comfortable and sighs again, “Did you know if you can dislocate your thumbs you can get out of handcuffs? Casey taught me that tonight.”
Devon laughs sleepily--she can almost hear the instinctive awesome he's thinking--and pulls her closer. Ellie closes her eyes.
* in case anyone wants background on how she's the Intersect when it's sent to Chuck. Here goes: Chuck never opened Bryce's email that night. He didn't want to and decided to leave it until the morning but he forgot when he rushed to work. Ellie goes into his room because her computer is acting up and she needs to check her email. Before she signs out of Chuck's email, she sees Bryce's email. Overprotective, she opens it. The rest is history.
