Owen Hargreaves completed 45 minutes on his return to action for United Reserves against Burnley.
The 28-year-old, out of action since September 2008 after tendonitis surgery on both knees, put in a sharp shift against the Clarets at a rain-sodden Moss Lane.
Having attracted a flurry of camera flashes upon taking to the field, Hargreaves was involved straight from United's kick-off, and he set the tone for an understated yet effective display with the first in a string of accurate passes.
Deployed primarily as a holding midfielder on the right of centre-midfield, Owen frequently found himself in tight situations, but invariably emerged from them successfully - showing particularly impressive close control and quick turns on two occasions.
A string of long passes were rendered obsolete by Burnley's penchant for using their offside trap, but Hargreaves' range of passing with either foot, mobility and stamina were all evident.
He was replaced at half-time by Magnus Eikrem, with United leading 1-0 through Febian Brandy's 22nd-minute header.
