Sorry for the delay on this. OK, basically I think that focusing on acceptance and convincing straights we're "normal" and "just like them" is a waste of time, because our numbers will always keep that acceptance from happening. Furthermore, I have no interest in being seen as "just like" a straight person, any more than I want to be seen as "just like" a Christian or a man. The fight for equality and tolerance should NOT have to include the sacrifice of assimilation, especially since we'll never be large enough as a group for that to work. It's my belief that we will always be seen as a minority, and no matter how unfortunate that is, dealing with it as fact gives us increased freedom under the circumstances.

The most powerful of the LGBT rights groups put their energy into legalizing marriage and general vying for acceptance, not tolerance. I think desensitization and visibility should be the priorities. This puts us on a path to tolerance, which unlike acceptance is not only healthy for us but necessary, and which I feel justified in expecting from people. I do not think the Hail Mary pass of seeking the embrace of all straights is good for us. I think it makes us look pandering and weak, and I think it adds to our internalized homo-, bi- and transphobia -- individually and within our groups -- by creating self-inflicted pressure to Fit In. This in turn fosters more instances of the phobias' symptoms, such as heavier substance use, the still-astronomical levels of depression and suicidal behavior, and all the other social diseases oppression brings us.
