Kurtis and I watched the HBO remake/revision last night and now I'm watching the Maysles' original documentary via the magic of YouTube. For those who have never heard of it,
here is some information. Even with the background added last night, I'm still curious how the Beales ended up the way they did. Was it due to being so sheltered by wealth that once the money faded away, they had no real idea how to survive? Was it depression and bipolar disorder leading a mother and daughter to become horribly co-dependent and increasingly isolated? Was it a combination of all of the following?
I will say that if Kurtis and I could find/afford a home on the Oregon coast like the original Grey Gardens with the craftsman style woodwork, the size, the acreage and the ocean view...that would be heavenly. Smell the salt air, watch the dogs run around...
Once Kurtis wakes up (or I go and nudge him awake), it's another day of Botany Weekend. Yesterday I worked in the yard - specifically, I worked on the motherfucking blackberry. For those who like the flavor of blackberries, may you NEVER have to deal with the vines. In Oregon, they are nasty weeds that if given an inch, will take over a mile - vines with super sharp thorns that can poke through flannel and leather.

I've seen the vines get as thick as over an inch in diameter and when you go cut them, I swear they fight back. You'll have a gloved fist full of vines and suddenly feel a vine wrapped around your ankle, or one will drop close to your face. I filled the yard waste container to bursting and due to all the rain followed by the heat, will be able to fill it all over again a few times. Today, we're repotting some plants that need bigger homes - our peace lily, our prayer plant and our dieffenbachia. There's also some ivy shoots to find homes for as well. Off to productivity!
