July Revolutions

What a glorious July. Spain made gay marriage legal, and Canada is not far behind.

Viva Espana.

July is a time for revolutions, including our own Independence Day. But this year, I think the revolution in gay marriage will hold more interest for me than anything local.

It feels so good to know there is progress being made, somewhere.

Al keeps forgetting to bring the DVD to my house. We are planning to watch it together. This weekend is the square dance convention, but we hope to get to it soon after.

I am looking forward to seeing your handiwork!

I'm a little amused that Americans aren't getting the news about Canada at all, or aren't getting it right.

Canada isn't "not far behind"; actually, Canada (Tuesday) was two days ahead of Spain (Thursday).

The law is a labyrinth hardybear July 1 2005, 20:31:11 UTC
Hey Dan,

As I read it, the article about Canada says that "The legislation drafted by Prime Minister Paul Martin's minority Liberal Party government was also expected to easily pass the Senate and become federal law by the end of July." So Canada's law, though "expected to pass the Senate," still could be derailed if the Senate chooses not to pass it.

Spain's law, however, already went to the upper house, and was rejected there. The lower house overturned the veto, which means that the only step left is to publish the new law in the Spanish newspapers and allow for a two week waiting period.

That's why I thought Canada was not quite so far along as Spain. Did I miss something about the Canada situation?

Hope you are all doing well in Toronto,

Peter

The Canadian and Spanish situations are as alike as can be, given the two countries' differing legislative rubrics: A couple more formalities are required in both countries before the law actually takes effect. In both Spain and Canada, the new laws are expected to take force around the end of July. The specific formalities required are different in the two countries, but that's all.
