Ok tbh I've never liked the Bear podcasts, they're relatively johnny-come-lately on the podcasting scene, and usually a copy of the zoo radio/shock jock format.

I'd recommend:
Daily Source Code - not listened to it for years but it was the first podcast, so a good place to start

CitizenReporter - to show that good reporting doesn't have to be done by corporates. Also does video podcasts (vlogs).

Night Nurse Show - this is a funny rude topical podcast of the sort that could NEVER be on radio. Same for Yeast Radio in the US but also an example of fictional characters in podcasts.

Keith and the Girl - I don't like this one but is probably the #1 podcast. Comedy, US.

Avant Garde all the Time - people at Ubuweb talking about their poetry and soundart archives - this and a lot of the music shows (mashups, drum and bass like The Hospital Records podcast) is a good example of 'nichecasting'

And for the music podcasts, I'd suggest my own podcast Radio Clash, still one of the longest going podcasts in the UK (what's referred to as first wave, pre iTunes/broadcasting muscling in, Nov 2004 - and apparently I've been taught as an example of podcasting and mashups on MA Radio Production here!)

If you need any info just ask, as I've been involved from day 1 I know a fair bit and even knos/met most of the people at various things. Hope it goes well (although I'm slightly freaked at the idea of podcasting being taught on academic courses! Best way to learn is to do it yourself, really).

Thanks for the information. You really are a gold mine of ideas!

What make you get into podcasting in the first place?

What got me into it was the death of John Peel. I was ranting and ranting about the fact he is irreplaceable, that modern radio is terrible when my partner just said 'why don't you do it'.

That put the idea into my head (that I could do it, NOT that I could replace John Peel), and coupled with the love of sharing music with people that when podcasting came to my notice via the sadly now defunct Mashup Podcast, it just seemed to fit.

I'd also played at pretend radio stations as a kid, even to the point of coming close to winning a famous find-a-kid-presenter competition at my local radio station when I was young, so I've been into radio for a long time, although I never wanted to make it my work.
