“What made you choose this? Was it me?” her father asks when she once again frets over a young boy that she cannot save from his addiction.
“It’s not always about you,” she says gently. He gives her a sad smile and kisses the top of her head.
She knows he doesn’t believe her, but it’s the truth. She doesn’t look at the young men she counsels and see her father. She looks at them and sees a person so desperate for a fix that he’d kidnap a brother and sister, so desperate that kidnapping is the least of his sins.
Every time she’s able to win a small victory with one of them. Every day that one of them stays away from the drugs that control their lives, she is able to keep the unspeakable from happening. It’s too late for Hank, too late for Gary, too late for her. But for someone else, it’s not too late, and that’s why she does what she does.
