Ryan’s gotten his fair share of scars over the years, and each one tells its own story.
One above his brow from Seamus’s wayward bottle. Another from the shootout with the wops, and an ugly, jagged line from Gloria tearing at his face. Each one more painful than the last.
These days Ryan sits in a cramped cell at Lardner, listening to the sound of dry heaves and choked sobs. And at night, when he runs a thumb across the fresh welts on Alvarez’s wrists, he squeezes his eyes shut, and thinks not even a bullet could compare to this.
