HT100 #176: 8 Hard Years; #157: Faith- Divine Resentment

Drabble number four!

When Leo gives him the package, it’s one of those afternoons; cold, bleak, and miserable. He manages to register the words death row, and entrusted before his mind’s elsewhere. He thinks Leo’s still speaking, saying something like dammit Ray, just toss the damn thing, but he isn’t really listening anymore. He only hears laughter, can only see that sadistic smirk and bright red hair.

He doesn’t bother opening it until later, long after Leo’s returned to his own office. There are melted black candles and drawings of devils and demons, but it’s the battered bible beneath it all that makes his blood freeze. Its pages are tattered and stained with wax, and blood and semen, of all things. A broken rosary is tucked inside the cover, the message as blatant as a kick in the balls.

God can’t protect you forever.

Ray’s one who finds destruction deplorable, especially a bible no less, but he wraps the book in white cloth, mutters a pray, and places it in the fireplace back at the parish. He watches the smoke rise and the ashes curl, and it’s that moment that he decides there’s nothing left to fear.

He won’t give Kirk the satisfaction.
