Scene One: Fate meets Destiny...

01. Lottery Ticket

The girl at the checkout, tits about to burst out’ve her blouse, held his hand, examining the palm minutely. Tracing a long, red fingernail along the lines, she said, “I see a change in your fortunes coming.”

“Yeah?” Chris Keller gave her a wink. “So you see me getting’ lucky, huh?”

She preened back at him. “I sure do, honey.”

Christ, they could at least pretend like they wanted him to work for it.

“Guess ya better,” he leaned in close, she leaned in closer, painted lips already parted in anticipation, “gimme one of those lottery games then.”

She blinked, comprehension slowly creeping into eyes, followed by a big show of being all insulted. “Fine, here,” she grabbed his dollar, slapped a ticket into his hand. “Bastard.”

Chris grinned. “You’ll see me in your dreams, babe,” he said, giving her a parting wink.

Out on the sidewalk, he dug a dime out of his pocket, scraped away at the hidden numbers -- tossed the ticket in the trash, just a buck wasted. No surprise; pigs’d fly before any kind of lucky break came his way.

Climbing on his motorcycle, he pulled out into traffic, swerved to avoid a car coming at him -- and crashed smack into the shiny new Lexus in front of him. Scraping along the asphalt as his bike careened off into traffic, he lay there stunned, looking up as some blond guy knelt beside him, snub-nosed face scrunched up with worry.

“How bad are you hurt?”

“Ain’t goin’ -- oww -- dancing anytime soon.”

Fuck, what a day.
