Title: School Daze
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Multiple
Summary: It all seemed so pre-staged and dramatic. The timing was just right, even the perfect backdrop had been provided for such a meeting. It was as if it were out of some play, but the sight of another person, one Jaejoong had never before seen, seemed to create an even greater tension that pulled them out of their theatrics and back into reality.

-Chapter Twenty-

Jaejoong had silently stolen away from the confines of the SM dormitories around three in the morning, a good few hours after his roommates had fallen asleep. Somehow, the SM beauty had been able to make it outside without brining any attention to the fact he was leaving building. Ever since Yoochun's little performance, there was someone constantly on patrol to make sure no students were up to any mischief.

Once making it out the door, Jaejoong shoved his hands into the pockets of his jeans and immediately turned in the direction of that grassy patch of land that separated his academy from Dong Wook's. He stood there for a moment, staring at the bit of earth, practically hoping Dong Wook would come out, but at the same time, wishing that he wouldn't for the sake of his own sanity.

Ever since the soccer match, ever since Jaejoong agreed not to speak to Choi Dong Wook, he and Yunho had become so much closer. And truth be told, he really did like the time he spent with Yunho. They learned so much more about each other, and always laughed and smiled when in the other's presence. There were no longer any walls between them. Jaejoong was happy with Yunho's company and companionship, but it was when Jaejoong was alone and free to think that he felt an unsettling stirring within the very pit of his stomach.

"Aish," he swore silently, scratching the back of his head and turning away from the neutral territory so that he might wander elsewhere. "I wish someone could just tell me what to do in such a situation."

He strode along the winding sidewalks of SM Academy, barely even noticing just where it was he was going to. Only when he reached the main gate of the stadium where SM and YG Academies had faced off, did he take in his surroundings. Rather than first looking to the field, he instantly glanced up at the starry sky. Somehow, it wasn't nearly as beautiful as that night he and Yunho had looked at them, despite the circumstances.

As the gates to the stadium were locked during this time of night, Jaejoong carefully climbed over the chain link fence. Rather than landing gracefully to his feet, the boy dropped to the ground in a small heap. Luckily enough the fence wasn't that high and the grass was softer than he remembered. He chuckled at his own clumsiness and wiped at his pants and shirt, attempting to rid himself of as much dirt as he possibly could, though not a single soul was around at such a ridiculous hour to witness his moment.

Or so he thought.

"You really have no grace whatsoever," came a smooth, yet broken voice from somewhere behind him, slightly raised because of the distance he knew lie between them.

Jaejoong froze, unable to turn around to match face and voice. Not because he couldn't, but because knew of the anguish this would add on. He focused hard on the grass, turning his head slightly away from the voice, unable to even speak himself.

"Pretty, say something." The distance between them had somehow lessened and dramatically. Dong Wook's voice was closer, much closer. Too much closer. "Please?"

Soon enough, Jaejoong felt cool fingers rest gently on his chin. The cool fingers he knew belonged to Choi Dong Wook, the one he wasn't supposed to be speaking with, the one he knew Yunho wouldn't even want him laying his eyes on. But it seemed inevitable as Dong Wook carefully lifted the boy's chin and met his eyes squarely.

It all seemed so pre-staged and dramatic. The timing was just right, even the perfect backdrop had been provided for such a meeting. It was as if it were out of some play, but the sight of another person, one Jaejoong had never before seen, seemed to create an even greater tension that pulled them out of their theatrics and back into reality.

"Who--?" Jaejoong began silently, after a careful analysis of the boy.

Dong Wook nearly melted at the sound of his angel's voice, after such a long time, even if it was just a single word that had passed from those plush lips.

So this is his angel, Wheesung sighed with a thoughtful frown, not exactly approving his idiot friend's choice. Dong Wook muttered silently to the beauty, occasionally stroking that pale cheek with the back of his hand, actions that reminded Wheesung of how the overly romantic Dong Wook had gotten into a spot of trouble before.

He shoved his hands into his pockets and turned away from the scene, feeling as if he'd throw up if he watched any longer. Both he and Dong Wook had stolen away from the party for a spell so that Dong Wook could pour his heart out, tell Wheesung all that had been happening, which of course was why he had come back in the first place.

"Kim Jaejoong," Wheesung had muttered when Dong Wook had finished describing his angel to him. The two boys sprawled out on the grass, staring up at the stars, but not really looking up at them. "From SM Academy," he went on when the boy at his side nodded. "Roommate with Kim Junsu, Shim Changmin and--" he stopped at the final name, neither boy particularly wanting to let the name roll of his tongue.

"Ah," Dong Wook sighed, "Yeah."

Wheesung nodded somberly, "You love this Kim Jaejoong?"

Silence wasn't the best way to describe Dong Wook's lack of answer, because with his eyes, he said so much, but it was swallowed up by the thickness of the night and his answer was never delivered. Wheesung let out a small chuckle, "Well, let's just say you like this Kim Jaejoong, then."

"Yeah," was the boy's silent response.

"What about Taebin?"

Dong Wook had ducked his head slightly, as if avoiding the issue entirely. True, he had once harbored feelings for the soccer team's captain. He had been the reason Dong Wook had even decided to kick a ball in the first place. "You know that's old, man. I don't even know why you brought that up."

"Probably because you still think about it," Wheesung commented slyly, allowing a knowing grin to spread across his face as his friend avoided his gaze. "I may be in a public school, my friend, but I am certainly in the know."

There wasn't a single doubt in his mind that the ever knowledgable Rain was feeding Wheesung information so that the boy could keep tabs on his old friends still caught up in the game that the two private schools played. "There's nothing anymore. I've only just started being somewhat nice to the jerk."

"It took you quite some time to get over my expulsion then."

His words did not form a question.

Dong Wook nodded solemly, unable to speak, and Wheesung could see that clearly. He nudged his friend gently and let out small chuckle, "Ya, I'm not mad at anybody for what happened, so don't beat yourself up about it. What happened, happened, man."

Just as Dong Wook's lips parted and drew breath to respond, the rattle of the fence in the distance caught his attention and his gaze quickly averted to the farther end of the field, where he could see a figure climbing over in order to enter the field. In an instant, the boy was to his feet and making his way to that figure, which had fallen to the grass below in a graceless heap.

"Pretty," Dong Wook muttered in the softest possible voice, no suggestions or prodding in his voice or motions, simply the most gentle voice he could muster, an attempt to at least gain back a friend. With feather light touches, he traced the back of Jaejoong's hand, taking in the sight of his angel for as long as he possibly could. It was now a rare instance that he was without Yunho's company, and he would take full advantage of the boy's absence. "Are you upset with me?"

Jaejoong struggled within himself, shifting uncomfortably and attempting to wiggle away from the YG student. He had promised Yunho. Promised that he wouldn't talk to Choi Dong Wook. Promised that he would have nothing to do with Yunho's biggest rival ever.

Promised.

Gave his word.

"Ani," Jaejoong finally breathed, ceasing his minor struggles against the boy, though slight tension still remained. He glanced over Dong Wook's shoulder at the boy, who had now turned his back to them, probably no longer interested in the happenings just several meters away. "Your friend--"

"It's fine," he muttered quickly, not raising his voice in the slightest. He turned the conversation back to Jaejoong, the one he was most anxious to hear about. "If you aren't upset, then why--?"

There was no need for Dong Wook to finish asking the question, nor was there any need for Jaejoong to answer the question which had been left hanging in the air. A moment passed in silence, almost as painful as the one Jaejoong had caused between himself and Yunho that night after the soccer match. In such a short amount of time, he had caused both boys immeasurable amounts of pain.

Only because he couldn't make a choice, because he wanted to please everyone.

"Dong Wook-ah," Jaejoong began silently, but he was unable to further speak because in a split second, his and Dong Wook's lips carefully met. It was more a warm embrace than a kiss. Comforting in its own right, but a still a guilty pleasure that Jaejoong shouldn't have indulged himself in.

He quickly broke the kiss and bowed a slight apology before turning to climb back over the fence. Dong Wook attempted to stop him, but it was useless, the boy was halfway up the fence and a short minute later, landing on the other side. Before taking his final leave, he glanced over his shoulder at Dong Wook who stared openly at him, only confusion evident in his wide eyes.

"Jaejoong," he began silently, stepping toward the fence.

His plea was useless. Jaejoong only apologized once more before hurrying off to his respected academy. He had hurt both boys enough already, it would be best to simply allow Dong Wook to forget he had ever existed, to find a new angel, to stop the insanity that had been mounting since the day he had arrived to SM Academy.
