dude, it's really not as complicated as these guys make it seem
yes draw more, as much as you can, till you can't anymore from life
chipboard, oak tag, yes card stock do NOT use styrene or any other sort of plastic materials (difficult + wasteful) . . . styrene is for model making and I guarantee that you'll have a horrible time trying to cut it unless it's for a straight line. . . . ( I make models for AD with it)
cardboard is also pretty thick for it, and can cause bleeding if you aren't careful I highly recommend chipboard
don't forget to look at work that you like and work from that , it helps just as much as working from observation ( you have to do both regardless )
what are you trying to do in particular? honestly there are different methods for everything so out with that first before you try to dive into the entire drawing/painting world
what materials other than stenciling do you wish to learn how to use better? that changes how you do things too
do you primarily draw with pencil, charcoal, pen, sharpie
also. . . that changes how you approach your drawings
technical drawing, cartooning, real life
all different approaches FYI although figure drawing between cartooning and realistic work starts off relatively the same but that's about it
I've primarily drawn with penicl but I would love to master the sharpie.
I would love to start brush painting in a surrealistic style.....I also want to try more of an abstract, graffiti-inspired mesh of color and solid images.
Less cartoony and more realistic.
But yeah...
Thanks for the stencil materials advice....I made some successfully sick stencils!
In other news, I haven't talked to you in a long, long time.... How's life?
