While the scarf was nice, the comic books had been a little over the top. A lot over the top, at that. He'd refilled his drink and tried to back away from the crowd a bit. Never mind that was impossible, in this apartment with this many people.

And, damn it, he couldn't leave early without hearing about it later. Rangiku and Momo both would kill him. They'd never let up on him. He slipped out now and they both would have his head. It wasn't worth that. (Perhaps.)

Still, he sidled over toward the door anyway. When it was safe to leave, he'd be the first out the door.

Comic books in tow, damn it.

Momo had managed to stick all her presents in one big bag. Most importantly, she had the gift that Rangiku had given her stuffed away where she didn’t have to look at it. If she didn’t look at it, she didn’t blush or stammer or do anything that would embarrass her later. She had broken off from the group to get one more glass of eggnog and found Toushirou hiding in a corner.

The eggnog was really good, that or she had drank enough that it didn’t matter anymore as to whether it tasted good or not, but she was definitely going to have to limit herself to one last glass. She needed to walk home after all, unless she could convince Toushirou to drive her home. Speaking of Toushirou, he was standing right in front of her and she had a Christmas present for him.

In her pocket even, it wasn’t a big gift. He was hard to shop for, he always had been. Granny used to bake him stuff and make him new clothes, she had always had to think hard on what to get him. She was pretty sure that one of these days she was going to run out of stuff for his birthdays and for Christmas, since they were right next to each other.

“Why are you hiding?” That was a good question, that and leaning against the wall he was standing next to was awfully convenient.

"I'm not hiding," he answered right away, giving Momo a once-over. She'd had far too much eggnog; probably thought she was good but she'd had too much to even think of walking home later. Especially if she decided to have anymore. "If I were hiding, no one would find me." Simple as that.

"Having a good time?" He still had to give her the gift he'd bought for her; maybe it should wait until he knew how lit she was - or planned on getting. If she was past the point of giggling at everything and into not remembering it the next morning, it was going to wait a day or two.

She nodded. “Yes,” she glanced back at the main group and smiled. “This was a good idea.” Never let it be said that Rangiku didn’t know how to throw a party, she definitely knew what she was doing. She blinked. Wait, he said no one would find him. She glanced up at him and frowned.

“I always found you.” It wasn’t hard, he wasn’t quite as good at hiding as he thought he was. At least when they were in the same house, which reminded her; she had a present for him. “I got you a present.”

She should tell him that before she forgot. It was Christmas which meant that she should not forget his present, even if she was a little tipsy.

He shook his head once; trust Momo to start jumping from topic to topic when she was on her way to lit. She did it normally and it just got worse the more she drank. He'd have to talk to Rangiku about special, non-alcoholic stuff for Momo.

"I have yours too." If she was giving him his now, he wasn't going to wait. She'd be all upset if he waited and he wasn't going to deal with it. He pulled the narrow box - wrapped in simple silver paper - out of his jacket pocket and held it out to her.

She blinked. Wait; did he beat her to giving him his present? She couldn’t not take the present. That was sneaky. She sat her cup on the table behind them and took the box from him. It was a thin box, looked like something Toushirou would come up with. That was much better than say… Rangiku getting her another present.

“Thank you,” one of these days she was going to give him his present first. Why silver? She would have to ask him about that if her birthday present ended up in silver to. Still though, it was pretty and better wrapped than what she would have come up with had she actually wrapped his present. Also, the paper was easy enough to take off, which was good. He was not a complicated package wrapper, no extra ribbons or bows that was wonderful. Her fingers fumbled a little bit but she managed to get the paper off and the box opened without too much trouble. She pulled the lid off and blinked.

He got her pens. She reached down and shifted one of the pens, really pretty pens. With her name on them, which… was actually quite perfect since she needed fancy pens for various lawyer things… well that and she was always leaving her pens somewhere and had to go track them down again. That with Rangiku’s pen, she was set for quite a while. And they were such pretty pens.

She smiled at him. “Thank you.” These were perfect. Really. “There perfect.”

He shrugged one shoulder. "I'm always picking up pens after you." Seemed like a good gift. Practical. Momo needed more practical things in her life.

"You're welcome."

Maybe he should drive her home. Call it a small Christmas gift.

She rummaged in her coat pocket and pulled out his present. It was a simple black box with a dark blue ribbon, but she had never really mastered the art of gift wrapping neatly. She was a master of the ribbon however. So she used it, shamelessly.

“Here,” she told him a little shyly. She had spent a lot of time looking for the right present for him, she hoped that he liked it, she really did.

He was so hard to buy for.

He took the box, raising an eyebrow. More ribbons. Everyone used ribbons and they just made it harder to get at what was inside the box. He glanced at her again and then untied the ribbon.

He opened the small box and touched the gold cufflinks lightly. Trust Momo to get his something small and shiny. "Thank you." It was a good gift.

Rangiku looked up from where she had been laughing in conversation with Yumi -- and almost choked on her corn. Well, well, well, and Akon had said she was silly for sticking that bit of mistletoe in the corner.

"Look, everyone~" she sang out loudly. "Look who's under the mistletoe!"

She swanned over, smiling brightly, "Time for one of the season's best traditions! Give him a kiss, Momo!"

Momo froze, eyes widening and turning slightly to stare at Rangiku. Wait? What? She glanced up and blinked, staring at the… yes that mistletoe. Toushirou had been hiding under mistletoe?

He… what?

“What?” Kiss… Toushirou? They wanted her to… do what?

Oh. Oh damn. He'd kill her for pointing that out. He glanced up, blinked, and somehow managed not to rest his face in his hands.

He would have this sort of luck, wouldn't he? "Rangiku..."

What the hell was wrong with his luck? Hiding - not that he really was hiding - under the mistletoe.

Rangiku just smiled at him, a little drunkenly. Honestly, it couldn't have been more perfect if she'd planned it.

"Go on," she goaded. "Kiss him! In the spirit of holiday, good cheer, tradition -- and Christmas!"

Momo blinked at him and frowned. “This,” she informed him. “If your fault,” and it was, even if she was this close to being drunk, she could absolutely tell that this was his fault. She glanced at… Rangiku and decided that arguing with her was just going to be more of a headache than she actually wanted to deal with. Drunk logic was hard to combat when you were almost drunk yourself. Besides it was Toushirou and she had kissed him on the cheek before, plenty of times when they were children.

So she leaned forward and aimed for his cheek. There were no stipulations about where she could or couldn’t kiss him and kissing him on the mouth was out. It took her a second to realize that she had caught part of his mouth instead of getting all cheek, and… well she pulled back.

That was…

… she just stared.

She was totally going to walk away now.

She kissed him. She was probably aiming for his cheek, but Momo had bad aim when she wasn't drunk. Apparently, she had even worse aim when she was on her way to lit.

Unless she... well, no. He wasn't going to even think about that. He stepped back and cleared his throat.

"Thanks for the cufflinks." Then he turned on his heel and walked away. More alcohol, less mistletoe. So what if he needed to work in the morning? He could work with coffee and dimmed lights.

He went that way, thanked her for her presents and fled and that was probably a good idea. She was going to go and sit over there and drink her eggnog.

Lots of eggnog.

Rangiku could not stop the absolute glee she felt from spreading across her features. That had been a kiss. Maybe not the full-on-smooch she'd been hoping for, but there was some definite lip-on-lip action there --

And aww, look at them run away from each other. That was just too precious!

Pointless, ultimately, but precious. Maybe this would be the nail that would start to drive the truth through their thick skulls. Either way, Ran felt that this was easily one of the best Christmas' ever.
