Gay Marriage in America

“No longer may this liberty be denied ... No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.”

-- Justice Anthony M. Kennedy

“Today, we can say, in no uncertain terms, that we have made our union a little more perfect.”

-- President Barack H. Obama

Kennedy wrote the majority opinion granting Constitutional protection to same-sex marriage. It is nation-wide and it's real. In recognizing this right, America has been a laggard trailing other nations, but we have arrived. It is rather surprising that this should happen when the nation and the Supreme Court has moved heavily rightward, and it did just squeak by with a 5-4 decision.

“The nature of injustice is that we may not always see it in our own times. The generations that wrote and ratified the Bill of Rights and the Fourteenth Amendment did not presume to know the extent of freedom in all of its dimensions, and so they entrusted to future generations a charter protecting the right of all persons to enjoy liberty as we learn its meaning.”

-- Justice Kennedy

There is much gnashing of teeth on the political right; so, this probably isn't over yet, but we have the law on our side now.
