so this is half for caitlin to see the pictures i took of work today and then half to link this to my family so they can see what i do because i think it's really exciting and this is the best summer job i've ever had.
I work at Caitlin's dad's dirt far up in Sunshine, MD past Brookeville and Olney where there are all sorts of awesome projects happening. My job is mostly to help out with the mushroom project our "bosses" Pascale and Jim started up this past May. We grow three kinds of mushrooms in large quantities to be sold for eating or to places like NIH to be used in studies for AIDS research and the like.
so this is the dirt part of the farm where all the compost sits in huge piles.
That's Pogo's (Caitlin's Dad's) fort that he built. To the right you can see the pasteurization area where we spend most of the time working and filling bags with matured cultures after sterilizing straw that they feed off of.
Certain types of mushrooms then go here when they are mature enough and don't need total darkness like they do at first. We put this mushroom house together on our own! The mushrooms get misted inside of this shack most of the day.
And this is the result! Caitlin and I were so excited when we went to the tent and saw this growing. It's a really good sign that we are doing everything right because everyone working on the project is so new to the whole process.
When we are dealing with Shiitake mushrooms, they feed off of sawdust at first and have to be put in the darkness of the cellar. Later on they feed off of wood in jars then they are put with straw and into the mushroom tent.
We don't always work with mushroom stuff. Today Pascale lent our labor over to Nicole who works on the garden most of the time but recently took in 100 chicks! So she gave us the task to help reduce fatalities with the chicks because their living conditions weren't great. We did all this research and had so much fun figuring out what to do.
!!! so many babies !!!! you can tell they are all different. I'm so excited to watch them all grow up and see how they will turn out. They are mostly really exotic chickens and some of them are going to have really intricate feather patterns and lots of head feathers.
Today was so great! My favorites were these ones that had these funny little pom poms on their heads. They are going to grow up to look like this....
Each day we get an hour break to eat and do whatever. Most of the time we play with the house kittens and climb on dirt piles. Most of the time we walk down to the Tridelphia Lake and go swimming if it's really hot.
