You Dismantle Me [2]

“And this kid thinks he’s the smartest guy in the world! It’s like he thinks he owns the class!” Brendon threw his hands in the air as he told his friend Ian about Ryan. Next to him Ian rolled his eyes.

“I bet he doesn’t think he rules the class. You are just a jackass when it comes to academics.”

“I’m not a jackass, I’m right. There is a complete difference. If I’m right 100% of the time while the rest of the class combined can only get 50% of the questions right, that proves that I’m the smartest,” Brendon stated. Ian stopped outside his house and put his hand on the fence.

“Brendon, you know, being smart isn’t everything.”

Brendon looked at him for a minute before turning around and walking down the sidewalk. It may not be everything to everyone else, but it is all he has.

Brendon hasn’t lived in this city for long. He moved two years ago from another part of the country due to his father getting a better job. He was the youngest of five siblings, all who had something that got them all the attention in the house while Brendon got to do all the cleaning, the cooking, the shopping, basically Brendon was the only one who did anything in that house.

His oldest sister was a state champion gymnastic star. His older brother, her twin, was a boxer who had a full scholarship to any school he wanted as long as he boxed. After the two oldest, there was his other brother who pitched a perfect game in the little league world series, and the high school world series. He was unbeatable. His other sister, well, she did everything, however track and field was her favorite. Brendon was left with no athletic ability what so ever. Though, his siblings weren’t the smartest ones in the world. Their grades weren’t the greatest, and that’s where Brendon showed his parents that he was a waste of their genes.

Without his smarts, he was nothing. He was just a maid to his family. And sometimes his brothers and sisters even forgot about him even with how smart he is. Most conversations are about how their whole family is athletic, but Brendon isn’t, so he isn’t a part of that family. He is a apart of his own family.

Everyone knew his siblings, nobody knew him. The only friends he really had were Blake and Ian, and they just seemed to be doing it out of pity, not because Brendon was interesting or something.

Yes Brendon came off as rude, self centered, arrogant, and an all around jackass, but as long as he was smart, he didn’t care. People can think of him as whatever they wanted. His just wanted to be something to his family. Even that was a failing mission, why worry about people who he would most likely never see after high school.

Maybe saying his parents didn’t care at all was a little misleading. They cared about how much money he would make. They worried about him going to the best college, even if Brendon didn’t want to go to it. They had his whole life planned out for him. He was going to law school, then meeting a nice woman, settle down, having a few kids with a big mansion on the coast of the town. Oh and no Brendon wouldn’t be living in that mansion, the rest of the family already designated him to take care of his parents when they were too old to take care of themselves. At least they were thinking about him.

Brendon walked up to his house and opened the door just as his oldest brother was coming out with a few of his friends. He didn’t even notice Brendon was there.

As he usually did Brendon went straight to his room, but he didn’t bother doing his homework, seeing as he would be going to Ryan’s house. He’ll probably be doing both of their homework seeing how Ryan wasn’t as smart as he thought he was. Brendon sat in his room blasting his ears with music for the rest of the evening, reading a few chapters in his book.

While he was reading, and even with his Ipod at the maximum he fell asleep. He was woke 5 minute before having to leave to Ryan’s house, a trip that will take him almost 15 minutes by foot  because of course nobody in his family was going to give him a ride. Even though they could all drive. They didn’t even wake him up for dinner, they were probably too busy drinking their protein shakes.

Not even bothering to say good bye, Brendon grabbed his backpack and walked right out the door. He checked his cell phone for the time and he was going to be almost thirty minutes late, but oh well, the kid could wait for him. Why should he rush over there? The kid should wait all night for him.

When he did eventually get there, Ryan was laying down on a bench on his front porch with a book in his hands. Brendon thought to himself that he planned to have a book so he would look smart. So, Brendon took out his book from his bag before Ryan saw him walking towards the house and pretended like he was reading while he was walking. He walked up the steps making enough noise that Ryan would finally notice he was there. Ryan looked at him with a confused look on his face.

“What? Never seen a chapter book before? Just because you’re still looking at picture books doesn’t mean another people don’t need colors to show them what’s going on.”

“No I was just a little confused because I don’t care how smart you are, you can’t read a book upside down.” Brendon looked down at the book in his hands and quickly flipped it. “Oh and this,” Ryan waved the book in his hand, “Is the Da Vinci Code. I’m pretty sure there are no pictures in this book. Anyways, I think my house is too small to enclose your ego so let’s stay out here.” Ryan swung his legs over the edge of the bench and pulled his bag from around the side.

“No it’s not my ego that’s too big, it’s my head.” Brendon took a seat next to Ryan and opened his bag, taking out his chemistry book and his notebook. “So I’ve already done up to chapter 25…”

“How did you do that? We’re only on chapter 16. That’s impossible. Some of the things required for the other chapters aren’t even in the book, she need to teach us.”

“See that’s what makes me smarter then you. You limit yourself to what others can teach you. You need to be independent to be smart.” Next to him Ryan snorted. “What?”

“You act like you know the world. And I bet the world isn’t even enough for you,” Ryan said not even looking at Brendon. He flipped through the pages of his chemistry book till he reached the page of that’s nights homework. “If you already did all the homework, what are you doing with the chemistry book?”

“You asked me to come study chemistry with you, I guess you need help. I’m happy you realized that I’m the best person to go to.” Ryan finally turned to Brendon with a baffled look. The face made Ryan look even more ridiculous then he did before.

“Look I asked you over so that we could get to know each other more so that we can start thinking about this competition thing. I’m trying to be nice, but it looks like you don’t want to play nice.”

“Well if that’s what you want,” Brendon slammed his book close and tossed it on the floor, landing with a loud thud, “then spill it. What wonders do you hold?”

Ryan looked like he was going to punch Brendon. And by how hard he was clenching his book, till his knuckles turned white, Brendon should be happy that Ryan has more self control then a lot of people. He released his death grip on the book and closed his eyes.

“Well, as you already know I’m Ryan and I enjoy chemistry and English. I’ve lived here all my life, but I do hope to move to Sweden some time in my life. Maybe study abroad for a year in college. My parents are both vets, they actually met when they both applied for the same job a few years before I was born. What else, oh I love music, I’ve been playing guitar for a few years now. I also run track.” After that Brendon wanted to nothing but scream. All Ryan would be talking about is how fast he is, how high he can jump and Brendon would never hear the end of it. “I’m an only child an-“

“So you are spoiled. That’s why you are so full of yourself.” This actually made Ryan laugh out loud.

“Spoiled? Hardly. And full of myself? Have you looked in the mirror as of late?”

“I don’t need to because as long as you’re still around I can’t look half as bad as you.” This time Ryan had no self control and Brendon got a 1000 page chemistry book to the head. And to add insult to injury, Brendon must not have noticed that Ryan had picked up his own chemistry book as the weapon of choice.

“What the fuck was that for!?”  Brendon screamed holding the back of his head.

“You are being a jackass. I should have smashed your nose in. Maybe it would have gone down to a normal size.” Now it was Brendon’s turn to take his attack.

[Your turn]

A. Brendon takes his bag (full of books) and throws it at Ryan
or
